13:15 Newbury – Martator
ITV Saturday gets under way here at Newbury with a handicap chase over an extended 2m. French import MARTATOR started off in the UK with a ridiculous mark of 142 and he was useless with that rating.
He’s now down to 118 and should be able to take this on the back of a second at this track last time when 1lb lower. His time has come for Venetia Williams and Charlie Deutsch.
13.25 Haydock – Fortescue (each-way)
ITV take in one race from Haydock Saturday in this handicap chase over an extended 3m4f. Incredibly FORTESCUE got going too late in this race last season when finishing fifth but he’s 5lb lower here and has strong each-way claims for Henry Daly and Hugh Nugent who takes off 3lb as he did twelve months ago.
My hope hasn’t won since February 2022, but his fourth behind Nassalam looks good form now and he has a huge chance of a place at least.
13:50 Newbury – Irish Hill
Here’s a handicap hurdle over an extended 2m4f. Get a Tonic did this column a right touch when scoring at 28-1 last time and she might well go in again. That said she jumped so well that day that it’s hard to believe she can put the same round in again when 8lb higher.
The one I like this time is IRISH HILL, who was fancied but well beaten in A Tonic’s race and can bounce back here for the champion Paul Nicholls and Harry Cobden.
14:10 Taunton – Queens Gamble
ITV also go to Taunton on Saturday, starting with this Listed novices’ hurdle over an extended 2m. QUEENS GAMBLE is rated 6lb inferior to rival Cast No Mento but I would expect her to be better than her mark for Harry Derham and Jonathan Burke. She looked good at Kempton last time and can improve a bundle.
14:25 Newbury – Certainly Red (each-way)
The Mandarin Handicap Chase over 3m2f. This is wide open. CERTAINLY RED is down 1lb for a third at Sandown last time when he kept on really well behind Truckers Lodge He’s not run well here before but at his best has each-way claims for Marc Goldstein and Lydia Richards. Mud is fine for him should the rain keep falling.

14.45 Taunton – Hurricane Harvey
Now a handicap hurdle over 3m. HURRICANE HARVEY is a strong stayer and has run well at big odds at both Cheltenham and Newbury on his last two starts for Fergal O’Brien. Jack Hogan gets the sit today and this is winnable with his 3lb claim a useful asset.
15:00 Newbury – Willmount
Up in class now for the Grade 1 Challow Hurdle over an extended 2m4f. There are some really good horses in here. WILLMOUNT blew me away when he scored on this track on debut for Nicky Henderson and Nico de Boinville.
He might not want too much rain as he was taken out of Sandown on heavy going, but he’s clearly talented and this trip should be ideal as he’s a 3m point-to-point scorer.
15:35 Newbury – Ballycamus (each-way)
A limited novices’ handicap chase over an extended 2m6f. This might be a step too far for BALLYCAMUS, but the Nigel Twiston-Davies runner is in good form and should stay so he has to have each-way claims at least under the decent Tom Bellamy.
My hope was a fine winner at Chepstow last time and a very useful second at Warwick this time before in a big field over hurdles. Seems to be getting his act together.
