12:05 An Bradan Feasa

AN BRADAN FEASA made a winning start over hurdles for Joseph O’Brien at Ballinrobe in September and he was highly tried on his debut for this yard when finishing an excellent second in a Grade 2 at this course last month.

He bumped into a very promising one that day, and that form is the best on offer, so with even more improvement expected, he ought to go close. Kourosh created a good impression at Wetherby and is second choice ahead of Paul Nicholls French recruit Kabral du Mathan.

12:40 Mofasa

This looks like a cracking race where it is hard to rule any of these out, but MOFASA just about edges the vote for Paul Nicholls. He was a dual winner over hurdles for Michael Scudamore last season and opened his account over fences at the second attempt at Huntingdon last month, largely fluent at his fences and asserting between the last two.

He is just 5lb higher now, and remains with plenty of potential, so should launch another bold bid. Wiseguy also has better days ahead of him and could emerge as the chief threat, although Weveallbeencaught, Some Scope and Everythingsontick all command plenty of respect, too.

    13:15 Calico

CALICO enjoyed a solid start over fences last season, winning a couple of times, and he left the impression he is still on a good mark on his return to action when runner-up at the November meeting.

He went with plenty of zest and impressed with his jumping, keeping on well on the run-in but just caught close home. That run should have put him spot on for this and he makes a fair bit of appeal from a 4lb higher mark. The biggest threat could come from In Excelsis Deo, who also shaped encouragingly at this venue on his reappearance, also.

    13:50 Thunder Rock

An intriguing renewal of the December Gold Cup and one where THUNDER ROCK seemingly has a very solid chance. He finished runner-up to subsequent Coral Gold Cup winner Datsalrightgino on his final start last season and gave the runner-up of that same race a beating on his reappearance at Carlisle in October.

That was a good performance and the form is clearly solid, so that makes Thunder Rock look well handicapped from a mark of 146, which is just 4lb higher than his last win in a handicap. Monmiral looks capable of better as a chaser on return and So Scottish might well have been lined up for this, so they’re also considered.

    14:25 Threeunderthrufive

A cracking staying chase in which cases can be made for plenty. However, preference is for THREEUNDERTHRUFIVE, who pulled clear with a progressive sort on his return in the Badger Beer at Wincanton five weeks ago, and Paul Nicholls’ charge looks primed to win his fifth success over the larger obstacles now.

Broadway Boy made it two from three in this sphere when bolting up here last month, so he looks a serious threat on handicap debut, with Easy As That and City Chief also fancied to feature.

        15:00 Illico De Cotte

ILLICO DE COTTE shaped very promisingly when coming well clear with another nice type in a modestly-run event at Lingfield on his hurdling debut last month and looks destined for better things on that evidence, so he’s put forward as the answer with this stiffer test expected to suit.

Shanagh Bob landed a weak race under a no-nonsense ride at Plumpton and is open to stacks of improvement, while Ruth Jefferson’s Kerryhill impressed at Kelso and shouldn’t be taken lightly in these deeper waters.

        15:35 Bonttay

BONTTAY has an excellent strike rate, winning six of her nine starts, and she looked better than ever when making a winning return over two miles at Hereford last month. She travelled through that contest like a horse quite a bit ahead of her mark, only winning by a neck in the end, but displaying a good attitude to fend off another likeable type.

There is plenty of stamina in her pedigree, so there could be even more to come from her now stepping up to two and a half miles, and she looks the one to beat. The handicapper was able to get his teeth into Windtothelightning after Wetherby but she remains capable of better and is second choice ahead of Nurse Susan.
