Of course we are all looking forward to the return of the fabulous Arkle winner El Fabiolo, me more than most having backed him before last year’s Cheltenham Festival at 8/1 for this season’s Champion Chase, but if ever he is going to be tested to the hilt and possibly beaten it will be on this his seasonal debut in the Hilly Way Chase where he has to shoulder his Grade One penalty.

Grand National runner-up Vanillier will almost certainly find this test too short and put his sometimes methodical jumping under too much stress which means that my each-way play of FILS DOR surely has to be the Gordon Elliott charge.

I thought that the five-year-old put up his best round of jumping over fences to date when really pushing the smart Dinoblue in the Barberstown Castle Chase at Naas, giving the odds-on favourite 7lbs.

There is no way he is the equal of the Willie Mullins’ charge here, but being race fit, probably still improving and getting a slice of weight here, I fancy he will once again rough up the market leader here.

Coming off a career best third in a Wexford maiden, top weight Champagne Mahler has to go close in a very weak two and a half mile novices handicap hurdle, while Magic Conqueror and the consistent if one paced C’est Rien are also set to play major roles in this low grade contest.

However, I can’t help but think that there is more to come over this trip from Ben Harvey’s mount, WEST AWAY. When you look at his breeding and then in detail at his five runs over hurdles, you have to believe the best is yet to come.

I thought that he was a real eye catcher in April when he was hardly over worked by Brian Hayes when a never nearer 18.25 lengths off the winner that day.

Following a break of 173 days there was also plenty of promise to be gleaned from his 11th of 18 in a better Punchestown hurdle than this on October 10th and now that the extra half a mile is put in his pathway it wouldn’t surprise me if this son of Westerner is a springer in the market place and takes a big step forward on his form to date.
