Tingle Creek tips and runner-by-runner guide to Sandown 3.00 on Saturday

Jonbon's latest assignment!

Jonbon

Jonbon faces four rivals in Saturday’s Tingle Creek Chase at Sandown including last year’s winner Edwardstone.

Nicky Henderson’s Champion Chase prospect – victorious on two previous starts over course and distance – laid down a marker for the campaign with a thumping display on seasonal reappearance in last month’s Shloer Chase.

Edwardstone has 9½l to find with Jonbon from that race but the Alan King-trained runner also heads to Sandown with a perfect record from two C&D outings.

Boothill – hammered by Jonbon in last season’s Henry VIII Novices’ Chase – is bidding to bring up a hat-trick but this represents a significant step up in grade.

Haddex Des Obeaux and Nube Negra complete the field for Saturday’s 15:00.

Tingle Creek verdict

Timeform: A Grade 1-winning hurdler, JONBON quickly cemented his status as a top-class chaser last term, runner-up in the Arkle prior to registering back-to-back Grade 1 victories at Aintree/over C&D. Teed up perfectly for this when running out an authoritative winner of the Shloer Chase 3 weeks ago (Edwardstone second), he’s hard to oppose. The latter-named may be the one to chase him home again, with the likeable and hat-trick seeking Boothill next best.

Tingle Creek runners and riders

The following horses have been declared for the Tingle Creek 2023.

Boothill

Trainer: Harry Fry Jockey: Jonathan Burke Age: 8 Weight: 11st 10lbs

3-time winner over fences last term including Grade 2 Wayward Lad at Kempton and better than ever in landing valuable back-to-back Ascot handicaps (at 16.7f) in recent weeks. Likeable type but good deal more on his plate on these terms.

***

Edwardstone

Trainer: Alan King Jockey: Tom Cannon Age: 9 Weight: 11st 10lbs

Likeable sort who won the Arkle at the 2022 Festival and showed top-class form when a commanding winner of this race on last season’s reappearance. Below best in Champion Chase on final start and seemed beaten fair and square by Jonbon on return in Grade 2 at Cheltenham last month.

****

Haddex Des Obeaux

Trainer: Gary Moore Jockey: Jack Tudor Age: 6 Weight: 11st 10lbs

Very progressive over fences, typically tanking along when landing valuable pot at Warwick (16.2f, heavy) in January. In process of running very well when falling last at Cheltenham (15.9f) in October and likely we’ve not seen very best of him. However, this demands even more.

***

Jonbon

Trainer: Nicky Henderson Jockey: Nico de Boinville Age: 7 Weight: 11st 10lbs

Grade 1 winning hurdler who has quickly developed into a top-class chaser, his only defeat in 6-race novice campaign coming at the hands of El Fabiolo in last season’s Arkle. Teed himself up for this with an authoritative success in Shloer Chase 3 weeks ago and he’s hard to oppose here.

*****

Nube Negra

Trainer: Dan Skelton Jockey: Jonjo O’Neill Jr. Age: 9 Weight: 11st 10lbs

Added the Shloer Chase to his tally for second successive season 13 months ago but below his best confined to just 2 starts thereafter last term and he was some way behind Jonbon when third in aforementioned race 3 weeks ago. Likely to come up short again.
