11:55 – Lady Gwen

LADY GWEN showed a good attitude to get the better of one who has fallen a long way in the weights over this course and distance under this rider a fortnight ago and, just 6 lb higher now he has been reassessed, she looks up to completing the hat-trick. Start In Front was left poorly placed in a small-field event on his return at Wetherby and shouldn’t be taken lightly now returning to a more suitable grade, especially with his stable back amongst the winners.

12:30- Givemefive

The ones with experience in this juvenile hurdle don’t set the bar so high, so a newcomer may come to the fore, and it is the Harry Derham-trained GIVEMEFIVE who is taken to come out on top. He showed fairly useful form when opening his account on the Flat on his final start for Johnny Murtagh and he has since joined an up-and-coming yard who are doing especially well with new recruits. Kartoon And Co, who scored at Stratford 59 days ago, sets the standard on form, and is feared most under a penalty.

13:05 – The Doyen Chief

THE DOYEN CHIEF was successful on his sole start in points – purchased for £110,000 afterwards – and he also made a winning start under Rules in a bumper at Hereford last season. He also looked a useful prospect when finishing runner-up on his debut over hurdles at Ludlow last month, forcing the odds-on favourite to pull out all the stops and in turn pulling well clear of the remainder. There should be even more to come from him now and he will be hard to beat with improvement forthcoming. Take No Chances impressed at Huntingdon and is the obvious threat.

13:40 – Diamond Twin

DIAMOND TWIN didn’t threaten in maiden or novice hurdles at up to 19 furlongs last season, but he was much stronger in the market on his return and handicap debut over this course and distance last month. He also wore a first-time tongue tie and left the impression he is starting life in handicaps on a handy mark, still having every chance jumping the final flight but carried left on the run-in and bumped close home. He is 3 lb higher now, but remains with potential, and is a horse to remain positive about. Beaufort West is potentially very well handicapped now and should be all the better for a recent run.

14:15 – Roger Rarebit

ROGER RAREBIT progressed well over hurdles last season and he made a perfect start over fences on his return at Uttoxeter 11 days ago, jumping to his left a little but typically travelling well and easily moving clear of his rivals, having the race sewn up from some way out. That was also a career-best effort and he looks just the type to go on progressing for a while in this sphere, so he makes plenty of appeal turned out under a 7 lb penalty. Mixedwave and O’Connell are the likely dangers.

14:50 – Carlos Des Flos

There are a few with chances, but CARO DES FLOS looks the way to go on the back of his wide-margin success over slightly further at this course three weeks ago, where he jumped fine in the main and forged clear of his rivals. He should launch another bold bid despite taking an 8 lb rise in the weights. Hard Frost is weighted to go well on his return with chasing newcomer Baghdad Central and Alex Hales’s new recruit Cokytho also in the picture.

15:25 – Diamond Koda

DIAMOND KODA again ran to a fairly useful level when runner-up back from six months off at Sandown last month, and it was encouraging that he could pull clear of the remainder with the winner given the steady pace. He can get off the mark now with Ballyvango possibly the lead threat. Casual Observer rates an interesting Rules debutant having finished runner-up to a promising one on his only start between the flags.
