13:40 Newbury – Get A Tonic (each way)

Weather permitting, ITV go to Newbury and Newcastle Saturday starting here with a handicap hurdle over an extended 2m4f. GET A TONIC is second run after a wind operation and there was a real sign of hope for the Harry Skelton/Dan Skelton runner that she might have something more to give despite only beating one home on her return at Warwick in a novice chase!

Despite some bad errors that day she she kept on nicely in the closing stages and clearly she will be much happier back over hurdles. A mark of 130 should be workable so I’ll risk eachway.

14:15 Newbury – Brentford Hope

This was once the Gerry Feilden but is now just a handicap hurdle over an extended 2m. Much depends on how ready Under Control is after a wind operation. She looked good last season.

I’m happy to have a go with BRENTFORD HOPE who, on Flat form, should be a 140+ hurdler and is in here off 133 after going up 11lb for a facile success at the track last time. He’s clearly in good order and if brushing up his jumping can be a real force for Harry Derham and Paul O’Brien.

14:50 Newbury – Monbeg Genius (each-way)

The big betting race of the day in the former Hennessy Handicap Chase over 3m2f. MONBEG GENIUS made a bad mistake on his comeback at Ascot and eventually pulled up. However, he was a most progressive handicapper for the Jonjo O’Neill snr/jnr team last season and I’d expect a lot better here.

The third behind Corach Rambler and Fastorslow in the Ultima Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival is arguably the best bit of handicap chase form on offer, and he had looked progressive in two previous victories at Chepstow. At the age of seven he should have more to give. I’ll be supporting eachway.

15:25 Newbury – Real Stone

Here’s another handicap chase over an extended 2m. Not a race I’m that excited by to be honest. Master Chewy might easily be good enough having taken on decent types over hurdles last season including Impaire et Passe in the Ballymore.

He jumps fences well enough. I’ll be with recent Haydock winner REAL STONE who not so long ago had wind surgery and seems to be getting his act together for the Skelton team of jockey Harry and trainer Dan. His jumping is sound.

So best of luck and pray for Yeeehaaas. You hear me Paddy?
