Ruby fancies Mahler Mission in the big one at 14:50 at Newbury as Newcastle on Saturday is lost to the weather.

13:40 Newbury – North Lodge (each-way)

NORTH LODGE hasn’t run in a while but has some really good back form. If there was any market confidence behind him it should be noted. Alan King’s runner could be value given some of his old form off a rating of 142 in a competitive 2m 4f handicap hurdle.

14:15 Newbury – Bad (each-way)

Under Control is short enough in the market. I thought he was lucky to beat Iberico Lord at Sandown last season then but the runner-up franked the form in no uncertain style by hosing up in the Greatwood Hurdle a fortnight ago at Cheltenham.

The one that looks open to improvement is Ben Pauling’s BAD. He was a talking horse in the Boodles Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival but disappointed there and at Aintree. His run back on seasonal debut at Ascot showed more promise though when third to Knickerbockerglory and can improve for that run.

14:50 Newbury – Mahler Mission

The feature Handicap Chase is ultra-competitive as always and initially I’d earmarked Monbeg Genius as one to watch – particularly on his Cheltenham running behind subsequent Grand National winner Corach Rambler and Punchestown Gold Cup and now John Durkan winner, Fastorslow. His comeback run at Ascot though was too bad to be true but it is a concern.

Complete Unknown seemed to work really well at Newbury racecourse last week when galloping all over Hermes Allen so that’s a positive while Stumptown was really well placed by trainer Gavin Cromwell last year to improve through the ranks, just being denied by Angel’s Dawn in the Kim Muir.

Harry Skelton’s Midnight River usually improves for a run or two and had a pipe-opener at Wetherby when third to Gentlemansgame and Bravemansgame in the Grade 2 Charlie Hall Chase so should come on for that effort now.

The one that sticks out to me though is John McConnell’s MAHLER MISSION. His second to Churchstonewarrior in the Grade 2 Ten Up Chase at Navan was a very good run and then tipped up last season in the National Hunt Chase when a few lengths clear at the second last. He had an improver’s profile until then and it would be a huge win for the stable if he were to bag this contest with Danny Mullins aboard.

Newbury 15:25 – Bollingerandkrug

Lucinda Russell’s BOLLINGERANDKRUG has won his last three – all at Kelso – and could still be improving. He only scraped home on his last start but looks to be going in the right direction.
