It’s the last day of the Paddy Power Cheltenham November Meeting so let’s see if we can get a few more winners. I’ve had a good couple of days so it will be nice to finish with a bang! Kim Bailey loves to have runners at Cheltenham – but not just social ones. He only runs what he firmly believes can get it done and you have to respect that.
The Kemble Brewery created a very good impression when winning last time and you have to think this dual-bumper winner has to be of interest over Ben Pauling’s Tellherthename who got beaten a nose last time.
Jonjo O’Neill had a nice winner on Saturday and his mount Crebilly had some good form in competitive races last year. I think he can now be even better over the larger obstacles. Railway Hurricane has run some good races at the track but seems to be a habitual loser and that gives me enough reason to be strong with my selection, the JP McManus owned horse.
The Pipe name is synonymous with winners at this meeting and First Lord De Cuet finished second to two very smart horses last season at Ffos Las and Chepstow on soft ground. He has had a wind operation since and I am willing to take a punt on him. However, Cloudy Glen is dangerous if they let him off in front!
We are taking Jonbon’s fitness on trust a little bit, but with only four runners I think he will get away with it. It’ll be interesting to see how Nico de Boinville gets on with him as a regular rider Aidan Coleman is injured. Nico knows him pretty well and, over 2m on soft ground, getting the right tune shouldn’t be too much of a problem.
Freddie Gingell rode a very big winner during the week, winning the Haldon Gold Cup. His mount here, Sonigino, has had a run this season and, finishing third in a big race at Chepstow and third in a good handicap at Aintree, the form got a boost on Saturday with Buddy One winning at Cheltenham. This is a wide-open contest and my pick is overpriced.
Brechin Castle was a £165k purchase after winning his point to point in Ireland. He was well backed on debut at Sedgefield when careering away for a 14-length win and looks the one to beat now.
