13:10 Fathom Two

FATHOM TWO has progressive form over hurdles and he proved at least as good as ever when finishing third on his handicap debut at Downpatrick six weeks ago, shaping a bit better than the bare result to boot.

He was beaten only two lengths at the line and did well under the circumstances having lost his place when pecking two out before meeting a bit of trouble.

Still totally unexposed after just three starts over obstacles, he will be well suited by this longer trip and is one to be interested in for the Gavin Cromwell yard which enjoyed plenty of success at the last Cheltenham meeting.

13:45 Calico

CALICO was in the process of running well when last seen falling in the Maghull Novices’ Chase at Aintree in April, around six lengths behind Jonbon in second when coming down at the final flight.

He proved himself a smart performer in his first campaign over fences and his good record when fresh identifies him as one to be positive about now back in a handicap from what remains a generous mark.

He is only 2lb higher in the weights than when scoring at Doncaster in March and the handicapper perhaps hasn’t given him enough credit for his improved showing at Aintree next time.

 

14:20 Petit Tonnerre

PETIT TONNERRE was one of the best of these over hurdles and he ended last season with an encouraging display in the County Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. Though beaten six lengths at the line, he shaped better than that having been caught further back than ideal, finishing with running left having been short of room before the last as well.

A lengthy, useful-looking gelding, he is built to make a better chaser and could be worth siding with on debut in what looks just an ordinary renewal of this Grade 2.

14:55 Back On The Lash

BACK ON THE LASH has won the last two renewals of this race, albeit the second of those wins came in January after it was postponed until then due to ground issues at the original fixture.

His latest run at Exeter after six months off is sure to have blown the cobwebs away and his hat-trick bid in this race is likely to have been a long-term target.

Now 2lb lower in the weights than when successful here in January, he clearly has plenty of handicapping scope and it will be no easy task for the likes of Delta Work trying to concede him fully 24lb.

 

 

15:30 Captain Teague

CAPTAIN TEAGUE returned from seven months off with an impressive success in the Persian War Novices’ Hurdle at Chepstow last time, running to a high level for a hurdling debutant as he forged clear on the run-in to win by nine and a half lengths.

This will be tougher under a Grade 2 penalty, but he still tops the field on Timeform’s weight-adjusted figures, while the large ‘P’ attached to his rating denotes that he is open to significant improvement.

An exciting prospect, he is fancied to make it two from two in this sphere on his way to bigger and better things.

16:05 Brook Bay

BROOK BAY has shown fair form when placed in both his starts over hurdles to date, first filling the runner-up spot at Uttoxeter last month and then producing an even better effort when finishing third at Wetherby a couple of weeks ago.

He was beaten only five lengths on the last occasion, holding every chance at the last before his effort flattened out. The way he shaped there suggests the drop back to two miles today will be in his favour and he’s one to bear in mind with further progress on the cards now making a quick switch to handicaps from a lowly mark.
