WRAPPEDUPINMAY, a winner of his only start in points, looked a good prospect when running out a wide-margin winner of a bumper here on New Year’s Day on his debut under Rules.
He disappointed when a beaten odds-on favourite on his only other start last season but he made a promising introduction over hurdles at Ffos Las last month, finding only a fellow point winner too strong. Wrappedupinmay had to settle for second but he was a long way clear of the rest and is entitled to progress with that experience under his belt.
Ma Belle Noire has been in excellent heart during the summer and made it three wins from her last four starts when successful at Worcester last time. That was a career-best effort from Ma Belle Noire and, given the sort of form she’s been in, a 5lb rise in the weights should not prevent another bold bid.
ASTA LA PASTA has to concede weight all around after making a successful start over hurdles at Uttoxeter last month but he looks up to the task. Asta La Pasta showed promise in bumpers last season, winning in good style at Market Rasen on his second and final start in that sphere, and he impressed on his hurdling debut at Uttoxeter, readily picking up the runner-up from the last and quickly asserting to score by two and a half lengths. He’s a promising type and has more to offer.
Major Fortune has been beaten a long way on all three starts over hurdles, but he went with more encouragement on his first outing for Dan Skelton (was previously with Tom Lacey) on his reappearance at Bangor last month.
He’s been disappointing over hurdles so far but Major Fortune showed ability in bumpers for Lacey, finishing placed on both starts in that sphere, and an opening British Horseracing Authority (BHA) mark of 81 could underestimate this lightly-raced five-year-old.
STAY AWAY FAY developed into a leading staying novice hurdler last term, winning the Albert Bartlett at the Cheltenham Festival before signing off with a creditable fourth in the Sefton at Aintree. This winning Irish pointer is an exciting prospect for novice chasing and is taken to make a winning start over fences.
Paul Nicholls has won the Haldon Gold Cup a record eight times and this year he relies on Solo who has gone well fresh before and won on his return at Sandown last season. Solo went on to show better form when landing the Grade 2 Pendil Novices’ Chase, going about the job in likeable fashion, and he holds solid claims based on that effort.
He was pulled up when last seen at Sandown in April but has had plenty of time to get over that and it would be little surprise to see him bounce back on his return.
BROOMFIELD PRESENT made a promising start to his career under Rules last season, winning two of his three outings over hurdles, impressing with how powerfully he hit the line when making a successful handicap debut at Haydock in March. His background as a winning pointer suggests he can make up into an even better chaser and he returns with trainer Kim Bailey among the winners.
