13:15 Curragh – Sirjack Thomas
The jump to Listed company last time out was just a step too far for Naas maiden winner Frazil and he has to be considered back in handicap company off a rating of 79 and it is worth remembering that it is early days for this son of Dawn Approach, who when he learns to settle will certainly stay a bit further.
A change of tactics saw a return to form for Clear Quartz last time out, while three-year-old Nituna also made my short list. But the nod goes to the old boy SIRJACK THOMAS who may just have another race like this in his locker.
His consistency in big field handicaps, just behind the placed horses, has meant that the assessor has found it hard to drop him too much if not at all. However, with regular rider Adam Caffrey’s 5lbs claim he is within a pound of his last win and you could argue he was a bit too free last time out when racing too prominently at the Curragh.
The eight-year-old is a much better horse not given too much daylight which helps him to relax a bit more and this big field gives the old boy a chance to do this.
13:50 Curragh – Stag Night
Two Stars is the unknown here, but taking on established performers I just feel that he will need a sixth furlong to be very effective. He is not all together ruled out, but I am rather sweet on the claims of the Zafonic gelding who found his mojo with a cracking four and three quarter length success at Naas last time out off a rating of 78.
STAG NIGHT has fully earned this rise to 90 and is still relatively unexposed for a horse of his age having experienced just the one start over five and a half furlongs.
This will be his first attempt at the minimum trip and he is assured of a rapid end to end gallop with at least three of his rivals that like to be at the sharp end of a contest. His guaranteed stamina (stays seven furlongs), is yet another reason to back him to defy that marked uplift in the weights.

15:15 Cork – Walk Away
We have already experienced several Nationals in the UK and Ireland this season and it is only the first week of November and here is another, but over a proper trip of three and a half miles. Surprisingly Mr Elliott has only three of the declared 14 runners, which suggests his number one is well fancied.
That charge looks to be the totally unexposed Royal Thief. This son of the great Fame and Glory is two from four over fences, (4 from 12 under rules), and was bang in contention turning for home in the Kim Muir at the Cheltenham Festival before weakening between the third last and penultimate obstacles.
Fairyhill Run ran a cracking race at Listowel last time out, but I am not sure that he is crying out for a slug fest at this trip whereas I am sure this set-up will suit the lightly raced 10-year-old Henry De Bromhead runner, WALK AWAY.
Now 10 rising 11, he remains 0-6 over fences and has had his jumping problems, but I fancy the HDB feels he has a well handicapped chaser on his hands here (rated 130) and surely wouldn’t have kept him in training if he didn’t think he had a nice prize of this ilk in him.

15:40 Carlisle – Phantom Getaway
Although he admittedly went off a 66/1 outsider for the Ultima Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival and was ultimately pulled up, this is still a drop in grade for Laskalin and the top weight has a fair record fresh so he is not ruled out off a rating of 133.
Further down the weights, the grey mare Flower Of Scotland is still open to improvement following a cracking campaign last season and a mark of 122 still looks very fair on the balance of those runs.
Irish raider Street Value has the benefit of a recent run over hurdles and he could be the biggest danger to Kim Bailey’s charge, PHANTOM GETAWAY. Bred to be better over fences than hurdles, his opening mark of 123 is very fair based on his timber topping exploits and any dig in the ground is another plus and his handler has started off this campaign in pretty good form.
