HOE JOLY SMOKE was successful on his sole start in points and he shaped with plenty of promise at this course on his Rules debut in a maiden hurdle on this card last year. He built on that when finishing third in a strong race over two miles next time, but seemed to lose his action when pulled up in a Grade 2 at Kelso on his final start.
Hoe Joly Smoke remains with potential on his return from a break and sets a good standard on form. Masaccio, Onethreefivenotout and Alcedo are among a host of good jumps prospects in opposition and the betting should be revealing.
There isn’t much hurdling experience on offer and Paul Nicholls, who saddles two, could hold the key. Preference is for DONT TELL SU, who is bred to be smart – out of a sister to Time For Rupert – and looks the part in the flesh, too.
He built on his debut effort when opening his account in a bumper at this course in April, showing encouraging speed for one with a stout pedigree, and he looks very interesting now moving up in trip on hurdling debut. Byorderofthecourt, who has a long absence to overcome, also makes appeal.
There should be more to come from unexposed six-year-old CONCETTO, who made a promising start over fences last season and the marathon trip was probably his undoing when only seventh in the Highland National when last seen in April.
This should suit much better and he can prove himself a well-handicapped horse. Minella Bobo needs to bounce back in a major way, but he has dropped a long way in the weights and will be a danger to all if able to get back on track. A clean round of jumping should see In Rem involved and Planned Paradise also makes the shortlist.
FORTUNA LIGNA made a solid start over hurdles last season, not needing to improve on her previous form to open her account in a mares’ novices’ hurdle over two and a half miles at this track when last seen in April.
She displayed a good attitude on that occasion, rallying well once headed to get back up close home, so she seems sure to appreciate this step up to three miles, and may have more to offer back in a handicap. Jasmiwa, on seasonal bow, for her in-form yard and Blue Bikini head the dangers.
An interesting race by class 5 standards and it could be worth siding with JUST OVER LAND, who is a brother to the same connections’ Good Risk At All, and showed glimpses of ability last season.
Admittedly, he was disappointing on his handicap debut over two and a half miles at this course when last seen, but he returns for a yard in cracking form, and time may tell he is especially well treated from a BHA mark of 99. Delgany Dreamer, on handicap debut, Uncle Arthur and Cardano are others to note.
HYMAC, a low-mileage seven-year-old, showed plenty to work on when placed both starts over hurdles last season, and there’s a strong chance that he will be seen in a better light now switched to fences.
He is taken to make a winning debut in this sphere off what may turn out to be a handy opening mark. Georges Saint tackles fences for the first time on these shores (dual chase winner in France) and he is feared most, while The King of Ryhope is another who may improve now sent chasing.
MAMMIES BOY hinted at ability in three starts in maiden and novice company last season, but he has seemingly been brought along with handicaps in mind, and looks particularly interesting on his return and handicap debut.
He wasn’t at all knocked about on his qualifying run at Southwell in January and is expected to relish this step up to two and a half miles. If a wind operation helps King of Lombardy to recapture the form he showed when second on his hurdle debut he could pose the chief threat.
This has the look of a good bumper, and Paul Nicholls has a strong record in the race, so CAPTAIN BELLAMY, who hacked up in an Irish point in the spring, is the suggestion before any betting clues are known. Jungle Wood, Tripoli Flyer, Albie Littlewood and Walk In The Hills are other likely types on paper.
