AFADIL developed into a fairly useful hurdler in his first season with the Paul Nicholls yard, producing his best effort when last seen winning a handicap at Ayr in April. He proved a class apart from his older rivals on that occasion, hitting the front after the last and quickly drawing clear from there to win by two lengths in ready fashion. A lightly-raced four-year-old, Afadil remains capable of better having had wind surgery during his subsequent absence and a 6 lb higher mark might not be enough to stop him in his follow-up bid.
MY MATE MOZZIE was turned over at short odds on his chasing debut at Fairyhouse three weeks ago, but he still shaped with plenty of encouragement in filling the runner-up spot. He was beaten two lengths at the line having jumped adequately in the main, showing more than enough to suggest he has a decent future in this sphere. A smart hurdler, My Mate Mozzie is certainly the pick of this quartet on raw talent and the experience he gained at Fairyhouse should stand him in good stead as he tries to get off the mark over fences at the second attempt.
EL ELEFANTE is unbeaten in three starts under Rules and she could hardly have been more impressive when making a successful hurdling debut at Perth last month, easing clear on the bridle from three out to win by 24 lengths. Admittedly, it would be dangerous to take a literal reading of that form, but El Elefante must be considered a useful prospect having thrashed a field containing three previous winners over hurdles. She’s in good hands with Lucinda Russell and certainly worth her place in these deeper waters as she tries to make it four from four.
GINNY’S DESTINY ended last season on a low note, but he’d shown a good level of ability in three previous starts over hurdles for Tom Lacey, including when filling the runner-up spot (beaten five lengths) behind the useful Grey Dawning in a Grade 2 at Warwick in January. He now makes the switch to chasing on his first start for Paul Nicholls, who is seeking his fifth victory in this race since 2010. This will also be his first start in a handicap of any description and it will be no surprise if he proves himself much better than a BHA mark of 135 in time.
KAMSINAS created an excellent impression when making a successful start to his hurdling career at Worcester a couple of weeks ago, cruising clear on the run-in to win by eight and a half lengths with seemingly any amount in hand. The most impressive aspect of that performance was the way he moved through the race, tanking into contention in the style of one capable of holding his own at a higher level. He gets the chance to prove that point today and is fancied to find the necessary improvement to take the step up in grade in his stride.
MOLE COURT improved again when last seen completing a hat-trick at Stratford in August, quickening clear soon after two out and just needing to be kept up to his work from there to land the spoils by four lengths. The manner of that victory suggests he was full value for a further 7 lb climb in the weights and there could be more to come from him after just four starts over fences. Already much improved since being fitted with cheekpieces, he will be suited by the longer trip today and seems sure to give another good account with a top amateur booked.
SERIOUS OPERATOR was well backed and duly resumed his progress to make a successful handicap debut at Ayr in April, impressing with some accurate jumping and the way he dug deep on the run-in to win by half a length. He is only 3 lb higher in the weights today and his excellent record when fresh also gives cause for optimism on his return from six months off (had wind surgery in the interim). In a wide-open finale, the unexposed Serious Operator appeals as a solid each-way bet as he seeks a fourth career success over hurdles.
