This looks an open novice event and slight preference is for the Richard Hannon-trained WESTERN, who produced his best effort when finishing third at Ascot two starts back. He ran no sort of race when down the field in a valuable sales event at the Curragh last month, but he can be afforded another chance to confirm earlier promise now back in calmer waters.
Global Skies is respected having showed plenty of stamina to score at Haydock last time, whilst the twice listed-placed World of Darcy is also hard to rule out.
SANCTION improved in each of her three starts for William Haggas and relished the step up to a mile and a quarter when opening her account on stable and handicap debut at this course in August. She stepped up even further when following up over a mile and a half at Catterick 18 days ago and she is well worth a try at this even longer trip.
Sanction is another 6lb higher in the weights and in a better race, but she is clearly on an upward curve, and makes plenty of appeal in her hat-trick bid. Reina del Mar is another who should be in the mix if able to shrug off a lesser effort last time.
MIDAIR has a smart pedigree and he was much improved from his debut when finishing runner-up over a mile at Goodwood last month. He sweated up beforehand, but had clearly learnt plenty, suited by the increase in trip and shaping encouragingly in defeat behind one with more experience.
Midair still didn’t look the finished article on that occasion and may prove a tough nut to crack with further progress on the cards. Going The Distance is also open to progress having overcome greenness to score at Ffos Las, whilst The King’s General is a very appealing newcomer for the Gosdens.
GO DADDY showed much improved form upped to a mile for the first time when beaten a head in second at Sandown three weeks ago. That race was won by an above-average newcomer and Go Daddy pushed him all the way, doing all of his best work at the finish suggesting he’ll relish this first try at a mile and a quarter.
An opening mark of 83 is fair enough and there is plenty to like about his chances. Let’s Dream opened his account at Goodwood last time and is feared most on his nursery bow, ahead of Marefuori.
IN THE TRENCHES finished third to the now high-class King of Steel in a course and distance (C&D) maiden around this time last year and he displayed similar form when runner-up on his return and handicap debut at Chepstow in June. He shaped as though in need of the run after another four months off a Sandown three weeks ago, losing two places close home in heavy ground.
On the pick of his efforts, he is more than capable of winning races from this mark, and he could still have more to offer. The three-year-old is taken to see off the challenge of the hat-trick seeking Yorkstone, with Romilda another who merits consideration.
STRESSFREE won a maiden at Longchamp on his second start in France and has made an encouraging start for David O’Meara, pulling clear of the remainder when runner-up at Ayr eight days ago. He was only headed in the final 100 yards and is fancied to now go one place better.
The main danger could be Ectocross, who arrives on the back of a recent C&D success, with Unplugged completing the shortlist.
SWING TO THE STARS seems to be building up to something, doing well under the circumstance to finish second at Brighton last month, not settling fully in a steadily-run race, and she could be the answer in what doesn’t look the deepest race. Fillyfudge and Corsican Caper head the dangers.
