Nursery handicaps are not normally my port of call but this opening contest has a really good shape to it. Several of these have raced at the sharp end and the best of them could be the top weight, Rednblue Sovereign.
But the speed up front should suit a hold-up horse despite the fact that the contours of this racecourse normally suits a prominent runner.
Crimson Spirit has already shown that he handles the twists and turns of this idiosyncratic track when winning his maiden over the course and distance and in a pretty good time as well. Last time out he missed the kick quite badly at Southwell and finished a never nearer eighth of 12, only beaten a shade over five lengths. As long as he doesn’t lag too far behind early on, he has solid credentials to return to winning ways.
After Falcon Eight was desperately unlucky for the second year running for us in the Irish Cesarewitch last week, having an interest in a big-field handicap, (albeit this is a handicap hurdle) is making me feel slightly reticent, but onwards and upwards!
I was drawn to On My Bike after his eye-catching effort at Ballinrobe last time out. But on reflection he was slightly flattered by that fast-finishing effort off a slow pace with the race falling apart in front of him. Still, he may well be worth a saver, but in the end I plumped for the bottom weight Rossies Tara.
The daughter of Kayf Tara has not been disgraced on three handicap hurdles this year, being outpaced more than anything else over 2m 4f. This extra quarter mile looks sure to play much more in her favour and if young Daniel King, who did nothing wrong on the mare last time, can get her into a really nice jumping rhythm, then she should be able to hit the frame at the very least.
If Percy Shelley comes back to the best of his French form, the top weight could still be well handicapped off a mark of 97 and is duly respected under Jason Watson who rides switchback tracks particularly well.
However, despite the attentions of course specialist and the well handicapped veteran Soto Sizzler, this looks an outstanding opening for the Ed Walker-trained youngster Terwada to continue his upward curve after a rather unlucky run at York in the Clipper Logistics Handicap. The gaps didn’t open up for him at crucial stages in a race where they didn’t go as quickly as anticipated.
The selection has surprisingly been dropped 1lb in the ratings to 95 and that looks a shade on the lenient side to me.
Nikovo has his easiest task for some time having run in much better races as a three-year-old in France when with the great Andre Fabre. But since arriving in England with Archie Watson he has hardly filled himself with glory having been beaten an accumulative total of 39 lengths in five starts in four Class 4 events and then down to this grade last time out. Consequently his mark has plummeted from 86 to 72 so the son of Kingman must have a chance on his easiest start to date.
Still, in receipt of 10lbs from the top weight, the four-year-old Change Of Fortune must have very solid claims of landing the gold medal. The key to his chance here is the drop in trip, but on ground that should bring his guaranteed stamina into play. On several of his recent starts he has looked to be coming with a winning run over 1m 2f, only to fade in the closing stages of those contests. That has meant in the past year his mark has dropped from 86 to 72 and this looks a cracking opportunity to open his account at the 15th time of asking.
