He had to pick his way through but made good headway to lead over a furlong out and, after being kept up to his work, got the verdict by a length and a quarter. He still looks fairly treated following a 3 lb rise in the weights and should launch another bold bid.
Newcomer Stop The Cavalry makes appeal on paper as the 200,000 guineas purchase is by Lope de Vega and out of a Group 3 winner in France who was also placed at Group 2 level. Stop The Cavalry makes her debut with the Ralph Beckett yard still in excellent form and it would be little surprise were she to get off the mark at the first attempt.
Avoriaz seemed to be getting the hang of things late on when fourth on debut at Salisbury, ultimately showing plenty to work with, and he duly showed improved form with that experience under his belt when finishing runner-up at Ffos Las four weeks ago. That was an interesting maiden that was run at a solid pace and produced a good time, and that appeals as just about the pick of form on offer.
Due For Luck made an excellent start to his career by winning a Carlisle maiden and following up in a Ripon novice, impressing with how strongly he travelled on both occasions. He was narrowly denied on his handicap debut at Chester a couple of weeks ago, missing out by a head, but he may well have won had he got a clearer run and not needed to wait for a gap on the home turn. He still looks well treated following a 2 lb rise in the weights and remains with potential.
Urban Outlook had shaped as if in need of a stiffer test when fourth in an 11-furlong handicap at Kempton on his reappearance last month and he duly benefited from the step up in trip when scoring over a mile and three-quarters at Chester a couple of weeks ago. Urban Outlook had the benefit of a prominent position in a steadily-run race but there was still plenty to like about the way he knuckled down to fend off the thriving runner-up. He remains unexposed as a stayer and makes appeal after edging up only 2 lb in the weights.
Billy No Mates has run well to finish placed on his last couple of outings, highlighting that he’s on a competitive mark. He shaped better than the bare result to finish third at Pontefract after being caught further back than ideal and he ran at least as well when finding only a progressive three-year-old too strong at Thirsk. He is able to run off the same mark here, which is 1 lb lower than the mark he defied at Thirsk last season, and he should go well at a track where he has registered a couple of course-and-distance wins.
Shahbaz wasn’t seen to best effect having been held up in a steadily-run race when only fourth at Chepstow last time but he had looked unlucky not to win at Yarmouth on his previous outing as the trouble he met at a crucial stage of the contest proved the difference in a finish of fine margins. Shahbaz remains fairly treated off the same mark and will have no issue with testing conditions as he landed a nursery on soft ground at Newmarket last season.
