This is usually a good maiden and there are plenty of well bred and promising colts in the line-up, including Wafei, a €185,000 breeze-up purchase who is by US Triple Crown winner American Pharoah and out of a lightly raced sister to the very smart multiple Group 1 winner Misty For Me. Wafei made a promising start to his career when runner-up at Haydock a few weeks ago, missing out by just a short head despite being held up in a steadily-run race and showing signs of greenness. He is entitled to progress from that experience and looks the one to side with here.
Blown Away boasts a good pedigree being by Invincible Spirit and out of a smart Listed winner and he has made a promising start to his career, getting off the mark at the third attempt at Chelmsford a couple of weeks ago. Blown Away had shaped as if in need of the experience on his first couple of starts over seven furlongs but he got off the mark with plenty to spare in a mile novice at Chelmsford, not needing to be fully extended to assert inside the final furlong and win by a length and three-quarters. He is in excellent hands with the Gosdens and remains capable of better as he steps into handicap company.
Executive Decision seemed unsuited by the step up to seven furlongs when denied in her hat-trick bid at Doncaster 11 days ago and she is better judged on her two wins over six furlongs. She displayed a good attitude when defying a penalty for her Goodwood success in a valuable Racing League event at Chepstow and she remains on a competitive mark off 4 lb higher. She can get back on the up now returned to six furlongs.
Military cost 375,000 guineas as a yearling and he looked like a good prospect when justifying strong support on his debut at Naas a couple of weeks ago, scoring with plenty in hand. Military readily drew two and a three-quarter lengths clear in that six-furlong maiden, earning the Timeform Large P which denotes he is opening to significant improvement. He will be suited by the step up to seven furlongs and can take this step up in class in his stride.
Trawlerman developed into a smart performer last season, winning a valuable handicap at Glorious Goodwood before landing the Ebor and then signing off with an excellent third in the Champions Long Distance Cup. He made little impact in a couple of starts in Saudi Arabia and Meydan earlier this year but looked at the top of his game when running out a wide-margin winner of a conditions race at Salisbury on his return a couple of weeks ago. He stands out on form and looks the one to beat.
Marhaba The Champ relished the step up to a mile and a half when landing a competitive handicap at York last month, staying on well to lead inside the final half-furlong and ultimately win a shade cosily. That looks like a solid piece of form and he’s probably still got more to offer over this trip so a 6 lb rise in the weights should not prevent another bold bid.
Restrict progressed well on the all-weather in the spring, winning a Wolverhampton maiden and a Kempton handicap, and he shaped well when runner-up at Newbury last month on his first start on turf. He was only denied by a short-head in a competitive seven-furlong handicap for the grade that is working out well and he still looks fairly treated following a 3 lb rise in the weights. He remains with potential and is bred to get a mile.
Pjanoo showed a good attitude to land a Racing League Handicap at Windsor last month and he ran to a similar level when beaten only two heads and a short-head in fourth in another competitive Racing League event at Wolverhampton last time. Those are solid pieces of form in the context of this race and Pjanoo looks like a big player with William Buick aboard for the first time.
