Zumaaty has had an up-and-down campaign but he has run well the last twice and followed a creditable third over this course and distance with an even better effort in second at Ayr on Friday. Zumaaty only just failed to peg back one who secured first run while he had to wait for a gap, and he is a big player off the same mark here. He remains 4 lb below the mark he defied a Wolverhampton earlier in the year.
Nominal Event was sent off at a huge price on debut at Chester but produced a promising first effort, catching the eye with how smoothly she travelled in rear after missing the break. She stuck to her task well to finish third and is entitled to progress for that experience so is worth siding with here.
Midnight Lir made the most of a good opportunity to get off the mark in maiden company at Beverley last month and he ran just as well when runner-up back at the same venue 11 days later, finding an improving rival too strong inside the final half-furlong. He wasn’t quite at that level when fourth at Chester last time but he shaped as if still in good form after a slow start placed him on the back foot. He’s a consistent sort and ought to give another good account of himself from a fair mark (has been eased 1 lb since last time).
Detective is still searching for his first win of the season but he ran as well as he has all year when runner-up at Carlisle earlier this month. The form of that race is working out well with the winner and fourth both scoring next time, while the third was only narrowly denied on his subsequent start. Detective has edged up 1 lb for his latest effort but remains 1 lb below his last winning mark and looks set to launch a bold bid. It’s also worth noting he won at this venue last season and ran well when a close-up third here in July.
Sacred Falls failed to meet expectations when a beaten odds-on favourite in a five-furlong Musselburgh novice last time but is worth another chance to confirm the promise of her previous effort in a handicap over this course and distance. Sacred Falls found one too good on her handicap debut but she travelled like the best horse at the weights, leading on the bridle over a furlong out but collared close home. She is only 1 lb higher in the weights than for that effort and could still have more to offer.
Global Spirit had been falling in the weights and took advantage of his much-reduced mark at Pontefract on Thursday, always looking like holding on after being produced to lead entering the final furlong. He has a 4 lb penalty to carry here but remains well treated on the sort of form he was showing off much higher marks last season and he can strike again while the iron is hot (he also ran well when third on his penultimate start).
Chrismoltisanti has struggled on all three starts for Ross O’Sullivan this season but showed fairly useful form when winning a Cork maiden last year, getting off the mark in gritty fashion. It’s worth taking a chance that the switch to Adrian Nicholls and the application of cheekpieces for the first time can spark a revival as he’d be up to winning a low-grade handicap like this if recapturing his best.
