BLUE STORM was easy to back on his debut at Newmarket in April but that didn’t stop him making a winning start, knowing what was required and displaying a good turn of foot under just hand riding. That form worked out well but he was disappointing under more forceful tactics when last seen in the National Stakes at Sandown. Blue Storm hasn’t been seen since, but appears to have been well placed her and is well worth another chance. Our Bank may prove the biggest danger, though any money for newcomer Garfield Shadow needs noting.
ACONCAGUA MOUNTAIN was strong in the betting and finally got off the mark for the season with blinkers replacing cheekpieces at Ayr on Thursday, seen to maximum effect from the front but ultimately winning with plenty in hand. He carries a 5 lb penalty now but that is more than offset by the claim of his jockey and he will be hard to stop if in the same form in what looks a weaker race. The consistent Ski Angel appeals as the one to chase home Iain Jardine’s handily-weightedfive-year-old.
BRINGBACKMEMORIES opened his account for this yard in a mile and a quarter handicap at Haydock in June and he has run some solid races in defeat since, having every chance at Redcar five days ago and only losing out on second place close home. He comes out well at the weights now dropping into selling company and will take all the beating if this doesn’t come too quick. Iconique and Yeeeaah appeal as the duo to give the selection most to do.
LOVE LIES caught the eye on her debut at Salisbury in July and she has improved as expected since to win her last two starts. She avoided any trouble in running and also looked more professional when opening her account at Ayr and she followed up under a penalty in straightforward fashion at Newcastle 16 days ago. Love Lies should have even more to offer now handicapping and an opening mark of 78 may prove lenient. Rock Melody was below par in the Ayr Bronze Cup on Friday but would merit plenty of respect if turned out quickly in a weaker race.
MIGHTY GURKHA belatedly took advantage of a drop in the weights in some style at Leicester in June, bounding clear of his rivals in a good time. He wasn’t at his best at Kempton two weeks ago, but he finds himself in a less-competitive event now and he has it in him to quickly bounce back. It is worth remembering he was a Group 3 winner as a juvenile and he may prove too classy for these. Elladora often runs well here so is feared most ahead of Blazing Son.
BARROLO started from a low base but he has proved a different proposition since sent handicapping this season, recording his fourth win of the year in a mile and a quarter handicap at Newmarket two starts back. He could only finish third at Newcastle last time, but he shaped well on what was his all-weather debut, not well placed in a steadily-run affair and the gaps not coming when he needed them. The feeling is that he remains on a good mark and is well worth backing to quickly resume winning ways. Lunacy, who won over course and distance is July, is feared most.
KELLS had fallen to a career-low mark and he finally opened his account at Thirsk on Monday, going with plenty of zest and soon moving clear after being produced to lead around two furlongs out. He scored by eight and a half lengths that day and, due to the conditions of that race, he is able torace from the same mark now, so is hard to oppose from a handicapping perspective. Black Smoke makes his second start for a new yard and looks the likeliest to capitalise if the selection fluffs his lines.
