VOLTERRA shaped very promisingly when fourth in a valuable Convivial maiden at York last month and, sure to have derived plenty from that initial effort, he’s fancied to score second time up for a trainer and owner combination that landed this corresponding event 12 months ago.
Colorada Dance has hit the crossbar on both outings so far and he may have to settle for silver yet again, with Individualism another worth keeping a close eye on.
SISYPHEAN finished one place behind stablemate and selection in the first race in the Convivial at York on debut and that is a formline to follow. He was drawn much wider than the four that finished ahead of him on that occasion, but he travelled well and was doing all of his best work at the finish. The step up to a mile is sure to suit and he arrives with plenty of potential.
Spirit of Acklam came in a couple of places behind the selection there and is feared most ahead of Offer And Receive and Glistening Nights.
BEN MACDUI hasn’t been with this yard long and belatedly took advantage of a much reduced mark at Newcastle two starts back, building on previous promise and also likely feeling the benefit of a recent breathing operation. He was unlucky not to follow up in a race won by his stablemate at Beverley last time, meeting trouble at a crucial stage but running on once in the clear.
Ben Macdui remains well treated on the pick of his form and is very much a horse to remain interested in. American Affair confirmed he’s back on the upgrade when scoring at Carlisle and is next best ahead of Aconcagua Mountain.
PAINTERS PALETTE has had a very productive year for these connections, winning four times, and proving better than ever in his latest success in a Racing League handicap at Wolverhampton earlier this month. He hung to his left early in the straight on that occasion but found plenty to lead inside the final furlong and was soon clear.
A subsequent 6lb rise leaves him on a career-high mark but he is going the right way and that success suggests he has even more to offer. Fellow last-time-out winner Cockalorum is a danger and another solid showing from Auld Toon Loon seems assured.
Cases can be made for pretty much all of these, but ALPHA FEMALE‘s claims are the most persuasive on the back of an improved recent effort at Kempton where she was a clear second off this mark. She is due to go up 4lb for that and gets the nod ahead of Golden Melody, who has posted several creditable efforts in defeat this year and shaped as though the return to this trip would be in her favour when fourth over a mile at Ripon last time.
HALE END showed much improved form fitted with first-time cheekpieces when opening his account in a handicap at Hamilton in June, and he has shown improved form in defeat on his last two starts when finding just one rival too good.
He was unlucky not to win taking on his elders for the first time at Beverley last month, too, finishing well after having to switch for a run, beaten a short head and the winner has gone in again since. Hale End still appeals as being well handicapped from just 1lb higher and can go one place better now. Tobetso and Tommy G head the list of dangers.
JKR COBBLER completed a quick-fire hat-trick over this course and distance earlier in the summer, producing another career-best effort for his latest success last month. The runner-up franked the form next time and JKR Cobbler has been freshened up since, so he will remain of interest from 6lb higher back at a course he clearly goes well at.
Keep Me Stable also arrives in good form and could be the main danger with the return to this longer trip likely to suit, while Cosa Sara can go well again back at this course.
HIGHFIELD VIKING‘s chances would be enhanced further by any additional rain but John Quinn’s charge gets the nod anyway, having held his form well since winning at Doncaster earlier in the year. Rwenearlytheredad has built up a fine rapport with Zak Wheatley and that combination are respected again after winning at Musselburgh last time, whilst both Monhammer and Rory should be in the mix if backing up their latest efforts.
