TRUSTY RUSTY has returned from five months off with two below-par efforts this summer, but she’s back in calmer waters today and a BHA mark of 70 is by no means insurmountable judged on the pick of her form. After all, it was only in December last year that she won off 72 on the all-weather at Southwell, while the booking of Oisin Murphy also catches the eye as she seeks a sixth career win.
WHISKEY PETE still looked green when finishing third in a novice event at Haydock last month, doing his best work once the penny dropped late on. He was beaten just a neck at the line and that race has already thrown up plenty of winners. Whiskey Pete certainly has the best form in this maiden and it looks a good opportunity for him to get off the mark with further progress on the cards.
NAVY JACK ran to a fairly useful level when faring best of the rest behind a subsequent listed winner in a maiden over this course and distance in July. Admittedly, he failed to reproduce that form when down the field at Newbury last time, but it’s far too soon to be writing him off after just one bad run and he’s worth another chance given how promising he’d looked here previously.
KNIGHT produced a career-best effort when filling the runner-up spot in the Celebration Mile at Goodwood last month, doing well to be beaten just half a length having looked a bit awkward on the track. He is clearly very effective when the mud is flying and the application of cheekpieces today could eke out more improvement as he seeks a first win of the campaign dropped to listed level.
CLASSIC TIMES shaped with plenty of encouragement when finishing third on her latest outing at Wolverhampton, keeping on steadily under a hands-and-heels ride. Tried in a hood for the first time today, she’s a likely improver on handicap debut and a BHA mark of 74 looks a good starting to point to life in this sphere for the in-form Roger Varian (70% of horses running to form).
BORN RULER improved again as he ran out a dominant winner over this course and distance last week, quickly drawing clear after being produced to lead entering the final furlong. This will be a quicker-than-ideal turnaround, but he’s clearly well treated under a 6 lb penalty and another bold bid seems assured for the Sir Mark Prescott yard which is so adept with this type of horse.
BLETCHLEY STORM returned from four months off with an encouraging third at Southwell last time, impressing with the way she moved into contention before her effort flattened out. She certainly showed enough to suggest that she’s on a workable mark and, still low mileage after just the six starts, it’s not out of the question that she could have more to offer now back down in trip.
