PREMIERSHIP recorded his third win of the year on debut for Michael Wigham at Yarmouth last month but he appeared to be stretched by the longer trip upped to a mile and a quarter at Ripon last time. He is almost certainly worth treating as still on a good mark, however, and is well worth backing to get back on the up returned to a mile. Copper And Five and Fifty Sent are potential dangers.
SALVUCCIO produced a promising first effort over six furlongs at Nottingham, shaping like he’d come on for the run, and he confirmed that impression when finishing runner-up over five furlongs at Bath last time. He still looked in need of the experience, not anywhere near as clued up as the winner, so he is entitled to do better still, and has found himself a good opportunity here.
There should be more to come from Ed Bethell’s Carlisle winner Havana Rose, too, and she’s second choice ahead of Townsend Manor.
BIRKENHEAD resumed winning ways in refitted cheekpieces at Southwell earlier in the year and he has been holding his form largely well since, beaten only by a progressive three-year-old who was ridden more positively at the same venue last time. He is 2lb higher in the weights now, but remains well treated on the pick of his form, and seems sure to launch another bold bid back on turf.
The hat-trick seeking Emeralds Pride heads the many dangers along with Elzaal, a stablemate of the selection, and The Grey Lass.
FORCEFUL SPEED was progressive last season and came on a bundle for his seasonal reappearance when resuming winning ways at Pontefract in June. He wore a first-time tongue strap on that occasion (retained) and appreciated the return to a sounder surface, making headway out wide on the home turn and keeping on well to edge a three-way photo.
The runner-up has franked the form since and he remains a horse to be positive about from 3lb higher. Stressfree is a likely improver now handicapping for David O’Meara having arrived from France and is also of firm interest.
JOJO RABBIT hasn’t won for over a year, but as a result he has fallen quite a way in the weights, and he ran his best race of the season when runner-up at Catterick last week. That came on soft ground, but he does have plenty of form on a faster surface and, though he is a horse that needs everything to drop right, he is worth persevering with from this sort of mark, particularly in an open handicap.
Hurstwood, Dream Deal, Impeller and the unexposed Mereside Diva head the many possible dangers.
This looks a weak race of its type on paper, the ones with experience not setting an exacting standard, so the William Haggas-trained newcomer PLINK looks the one to side with.
He is already gelded, but he has an attractive pedigree, out of a sister to a smart winner, and he won’t have to be anything special to make a winning start. Greenwich and Shotley Royale both retain potential and could be in the mix.
MERRIJIG has had the form of his latest Carlisle near miss boosted by the winner and the runner-up and he seems sure to go close if in the same form and if the same positive tactics are employed.
Lincoln Rockstar might pull out a bit more for this trip and is second choice ahead of fellow three-year-old filly Lady Bracken, who has yet to show much but has fewer convictions than the majority of these and her leading stable is in good form.
