14.25 – Doncaster – ANCESTRAL LAND

All eyes here will be on the returning Nine Tenths (not raced since the end of May) but there are form questions as regards his success over Pastiche. The last named has twice been well beaten off a mark of 87, while the third and fourth home that day have subsequently been unsuccesful off 82 and 75.

Of the market leaders, Poet Master is the more likely lead player as seven furlongs has always looked his trip and there were excuses for his below par display at Haydock Park last time out following all the way wins at Musselburgh and back at the Merseyside course. But the huge value here has to be with the Clive Cox runner ANCESTRAL LAND, especially as the yard have hit form again and a fast run seven with give in the ground looks his optimum set-up.

The son of Sioux Nation has been tried at up to a mile, most notably when fourth in the Craven Stakes at Newmarket, but this is his level now and the handicapper has been kind in dropping him from a rating of 101 down to his current mark of 94 and I shall be hugely disappointed if he isn’t in pitching at the sharp end come the climax of this class two event.

15:35 – Doncaster – CELL SA BEELA

It will be interesting to see Cache in the parade ring after some 457 days off the track, but I have no doubt that both the owners and her shrewd trainer wouldn’t be running the last year’s 1,000 Guineas winner again unless she had been showing them plenty at home and the give in the ground is a plus. Market movements on the day may well tell us plenty more, but for this year’s renewal of the Sceptre Stakes she is up against a fairly deep field and will need to be at the top of her game.

The likes of Goodwood winner Magical Sunset (will get the pace in the race she needs) and Potapova offer up classy rivals to the George Boughey trained runner, but there are any number of each-way, value plays we could go with here and top of my personal punting shop has to be the Roger Varian trained runner CELL SA BEELA who will relish a fast run race over this extended seven.

I thought that she was desperately unlucky in the Coral Distaff at Sandown Park where she was badly held up in the run and following a short break ran a lovely race back when a never nearer length and three quarters off Loliwood in the Prix de la Cochere at Longchamp. There should be even more to come from the daughter of the great Kingman.

17:20 -Doncaster – J R CAVAGIN

A cracking five furlong handicap sprint to end the meeting on and I suspect the ground will be no worse than good to soft by the off time here (if the weather forecast is anywhere near correct for the South Yorkshire track). The Dunkirk Lads (a good second to Jordan Electrics at Carlisle last time out) and well handicapped pair, Catch Cunningham and Selby’s Pride, are both respected, but at a double figure price I cannot leave alone J R CAVAGIN here.

Fully 5lbs below his last winning mark, this strongly built speedster was given the perfect ride by last time out by Graham Lee at Beverley, but just found one too good at the weights in the form of Chester Le Streak and I expect he may well be a bit more restrained in his tactics here was so much other pace in the race.

He gets a chance to run off exactly the same mark here and if Lee can just find a wee bit of cover on the selection then I think that there is every chance that he can pounce late and record a fourth career win on his 17th outing.

17:45 – Musselburgh – TURBO COMMAND

A low grade seven furlong handicap to end our race previews for this week and several of the seven runner field can be given clear chance if they return to anywhere near their best form.

Course and distance winner Spartakos and Doomsday (a beaten favourite when well fancied by connections at Catterick Bridge last time out) are both weighted to play a part if things go their way, but they may not be able to handle Alison Hamilton’s charge TURBO COMMAND who finally gets a chance to shine over a track which suits his run style as long at her experienced jockey doesn’t make too much use of his charge in the early exchanges.

Best when held onto, as his last win at Southwell suggests off a mark of 57, the grey gelding has a massive chance here off 49 in a race he should be winning against rivals that find it desperately hard to get their hands in front.
