The verdict goes to AYYAB, who is heading in the right direction and could well continue the progress now she’s handicapping. Ala Kaifi, another 3yo who is still fairly unexposed, is second choice ahead of Knights Affair who looks a possible improver. Richard P Smith looks the pick of the older runners.
Several runners are similarly appealing. The narrow vote goes to ZOUKY who is building up a good strike-rate on turf and could well improve further, especially as she is so unexposed over 7f. Nine Tenths, Reminder and Executive Decision are all worth respect upped to this distance, while Poet Master is 2-2 at the trip and remains of interest. Second choice is Nine Tenths.
A charity race that has lent itself to surprise results and only one favourite has done the business in ten years. However, the shortlist is best whittled down to the few horses with soft-ground credentials. As a previous course and distance (C&D) winner under similar conditions and heading here on the back of a positive performance on the AW last week, OH HERBERTS REIGN looks to have plenty going for him.
The danger could be a familiar face in his stablemate Always Fearless, while others to consider are Devasboy and Dandy Maestro.
This year’s Sceptre partly revolves around whether Classic-winning filly Cachet returns in top form. She has to overcome a lengthy absence but has an unblemished first-time-out record and commands respect, especially if the market speaks favourably. An interesting alternative is VETIVER (NAP) who is progressing nicely, remains unbeaten under P J McDonald and represents a yard that has a great record in this contest in recent years.
Dandy Alys, who ties in closely with the selection on Carlisle running, is the suggested second choice from a punting angle. Nigiri has a low rating in this context but she’s improving fast, while Dream Of Love remains of interest and Matilda Picotte has possibilities granted an uncontested lead.
It’s a poor numerical turnout for this Listed prize but still a race of interest, including from a tactical perspective. Raasel (second choice) and Rogue Lightning have been played late when winning strong handicaps and this small-field scenario may not play to either’s strengths, while the latter also has something to prove on ground softer than good.
Fine Wine looks the likely leader but he might not have the class to hang on and SILKY WILKIE might be the answer. He’s coming here on the back of two rock-solid efforts and can stalk the pace before making his move.
While STATE OF DESIRE has essentially been disappointing given his top-class pedigree, he retains some potential now entering nurseries on the back of being gelded. Sea The Dream is another well-related 2yo who should make his mark in handicaps but the danger could be Monsieur Melee, who ran an encouraging latest race with a view to this return to 1m.
This looks lively for the grade with a number of interesting sprinters on show. Slingsbytoo threatens to be well suited by this intermediate trip and is unexposed in cheekpieces, Bella Kopella has more ability than her mark would indicate and last year’s winner J R Cavagin hinted at a revival last time.
The two to appeal most are class-dropping Catch Cunningham, whose latest Ripon effort was much more promising, and THORNABY PEARL. The selection has been a shade disappointing since his Ripon win but he travelled supremely well through a Carlisle handicap last time and can produce a more potent finishing effort back on slower ground today.
