Iberian looked pretty decent on his racecourse debut and then put up an improved display when second in the Vintage at the Glorious Goodwood meeting. After being slightly immature and racing keenly in the early stages, he should have improved both mentally and physically from that and can give the Charles Hills team a big winner.
Modaara has always been a bit of a talking horse in the headquarters of racing at Newmarket and this is her opportunity to finally rubber stamp herself as a black-type performer. A slight ease in the ground could well see her in a better light as connections blamed the rattling fast ground at Haydock as a stumbling block last time.
Existent has finally dropped down to a mark that he can be competitive off. He didn’t quite get a clear cut at the leaders over the minimum at the Shergar Cup meeting last time. Slightly stepping up to the intermediate distance of 5 1/2 furlongs looks tailor-made for him. There’s a slight dig in the ground too so expect him to rattle home at a big each-way price.
Wisper bumped into a very well handicapped runner in Graignes at Sandown when we last saw her just under a month ago. Admittedly, she will need a bit of luck from her starting position out wide in stall nine but she is a hold-up performer and will have to be ridden cold while she waits. Our young pilot Aidan Keeley takes off another valuable 3lbs too.
Biggles put up a career-best when winning the Bunbury Cup at the July meeting with some cut underfoot and with Ryan Moore in the saddle, he will need another career-best with this line-up. It looks on the cards as there will be quite a tussle on the front end and it should suit Biggles’ hold-up tactics perfectly. Ryan will have a bullseye on the back of the leaders.
The manner of Continuous‘ victory at York was very impressive and that’s without allowing for the fact that the leaders went too quick early on. His master trainer Aidan O’Brien was using that contest as a prep for the final Classic of the season and we can expect to see a more streamlined individual turning up at Doncaster. He is still an unknown quantity full of potential who is stepping up in distance.
