SOUTH SHORE was backed into favouritism on his debut at Ripon last month and shaped particularly well, not well away but showing plenty of ability to pass all over his rivals only to be wore down close home. He looks a sure-fire improver on the back of that effort and he is taken to progress past standard-setter Cover Point, who should find this easier now back in maiden company. Nazron is proving a consistent sort and can’t be discounted either.
IMPEACH was a three-time winner on the all-weather for his previous yard but rather lost his way this year, but he took a big step back in the right direction on his first start for Michael Attwater at Goodwood three weeks ago. That was his first start for 11 weeks and it told in the closing stages, produced to challenge inside the final furlong but having no more to give close home. He seems sure to strip fitter for that run and can take advantage of a reduced mark now. In-form course and distance winner Devil’s Angel rates a big danger, however, while the reliable Four Adaay is also considered.
FRANKELIAN is from a smart staying family and, though she was tight enough in the betting for her debut over a mile at Goodwood three weeks ago, she looked badly in need of the experience, soon off the bridle and hanging to her right over a furlong out. She can be expected to have derived plenty for that initial experience, though, and a much better showing is in the offing now, so she’s narrowly preferred to Our Golden One, who also shaped with encouragement first time out.
DARK ENCOUNTER wasn’t beaten too far on his handicap debut in a hot nursery at York’s Ebor Meeting and he was all the rage in the betting off the back of that effort when opening his account at Newcastle last week. That was a big step forward and you could have called him the winner some way from home, produced to lead in the final furlong and just pushed out to score comfortably. He is ahead of his mark turned out under a penalty and should take all of the beating returned to turf. I’m Puzzled ran his best race to date also at Newcastle last time and can pose the biggest threat.
The vote in this trappy-looking contest goes to UNDER THE TWILIGHT, who returned to form when hitting the crossbar at Windsor where she shaped as though the return to this trip would be in her favour. She is just 1 lb higher now and shouldn’t be fazed by the return to seven furlongs. Likely pace angle Azano will be dangerous if allowed too much rope out in front, while Silver Samurai’s confidence may have been boosted by his Newmarket success and he also merits respect in a competitive handicap.
SWISS STAR has an excellent sprinting pedigree – out of a smart mare who is closely related to Swiss Spirt and Swiss Diva – and she has improved with each run this year following her debut in June. She produced a career-best effort when narrowly coming out on top at Newmarket last time, challenging over a furlong out and displaying a terrific attitude to lead near the line. Swiss Star is 3 lb higher now but is bred to be better than this grade and is the type to go on progressing, especially as she shapes as though the step up to seven furlongs will suit. Hot Chesnut looks very dangerous on the back of a near-miss and is next on the list ahead of the consistent Coco Jamboo.
STRONG IMPACT’s sales price rose to 115,000 guineas as a yearling and she has shaped well in a couple of maidens up to a mile and a half at Newmarket this season. She bumped into a useful sort in May and another above-average type two weeks later and on both occasions she left the impression she was still learning. We haven’t seen her since, but she remains with plenty of potential now moving into handicaps, and an opening mark of 81 may well underestimate her.
