Horse Racing tips: Matt Chapman’s Saturday picks for ITV Racing at Doncaster & Chester

It's Day 3 of the St Leger Festival and Mr @MCYeeehaaa fancies Chesspiece in the Main Event at 15:35 at Doncaster.

13:50 Doncaster Rosallion

A Classic day on ITV gets under way here with the Group 2 Champagne Stakes for youngsters over seven furlongs. It’s impossible to oppose ROSALLION who looks a very decent prospect for Richard Hannon and jockey Sean Levey.

The trainer has taken this with Estidhkaar, Threat and Chindit before but this son of Blue Point might be the best of all of them. A winner on debut at Newbury, Rosallion went on to Ascot where he hacked up in Listed company from a horse who has since himself scored in Listed class. Stays well and should have no problem with the ground.

14:05 Chester Bluestocking

ITV also go to Chester on Saturday starting with this Listed event over an extended mile and a half. Very hard to oppose BLUE STOCKING who should get a confidence booster here for the Westover team of Juddmonte Farms, Ralph Beckett and Rob Hornby.

The Camelot offspring has been consistent without winning since her debut success at Salisbury and her runs this term include a third at Royal Ascot in the Ribblesdale and second in the Irish Oaks. Last time she was fourth in the Yorkshire Oaks and with a rating of 111 she should be good enough considering weight for age allowance.

 

14:25 Doncaster Makanah (each-way)

One of my favourite handicap sprints of the season in the Portland over the specialist trip of an extended five furlongs. Despite the stable being very quiet, I have a feeling MAKANAH will take all the beating here for Julie Camacho and Callum Rodriguez.

This distance is ideal for last year’s sixth home and he can run off 96 here whereas he was rated 101 this time last year. My hope proved at York last time he’s in good shape with a fourth in a big field and I really see no reason why he won’t take the world of beating. It’s a crazy race to be confident in with an eight-year-old – but I’m confident of a huge each-way run.

14:40 Chester Box To Box

A handicap over an extended mile and a quarter. This is tricky. BOX TO BOX probably found the ground too fast when flopping at York last time and is best judged on a course and distance win here back in June. He’s only up 3lb for this and while an outside draw is not ideal, when he scored he raced wide and led at a fast pace so no doubt he will try and do the same under David Probert for a team who love to score at this track.

 

15:00 Doncaster Spycatcher

Up in class for the Group 2 Park Stakes over seven furlongs. SPYCATCHER has a bit to find with some of these on ratings but he’s in great form and might just be too good for a bang in-form stable of Karl Burke.

Clifford Lee takes the mount on a horse who ran really well in the Victoria Cup earlier in the campaign and also when second in a Group 1 at Deauville behind King Gold. Sandrine was well seen off and a repeat of that effort should be good enough.

15:35 Doncaster Chesspiece

The big race of the day in the Group 1 St Leger, Britain’s final Classic of the season, for three-year-olds over an extended mile and six furlongs. This is a good renewal. I’m hoping it’s checkmate for CHESSPIECE who looks massively overpriced for the Simon & Ed Crisford stable.

James Doyle is on top having been in great form and the Goodwood runner-up should be backed here judged on his form against Desert Hero and at Royal Ascot behind Gregory where connections feel the ground was a little faster than ideal.

My selection will be well suited to being back up in trip and I’m hoping he can hit the frame at the very least.
