Big Evs faces 11 rivals in the Group 2 Flying Childers Stakes at Doncaster as the two-year-old is back racing his own age group.

After landing the Molecomb Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, the Blue Point colt was supplemented for the Nunthorpe Stakes but failed to land a blow on his elders and trailed home in 14th.

The field for Friday’s 14:25 also includes the first two home in the Norfolk Stakes, shock 150/1 hero Valiant Force and Malc, as well as Listed winners Graceful Thunder, Inquisitively and Kylian.

The latest Flying Childers Stakes odds are on the Paddy Power website and Paddy Power app, otherwise Timeform’s guide to the runners as well as betting tips from the racing boffins can be found below.

Flying Childers Stakes tips

Timeform: BIG EVS’s no show in the Nunthorpe at York can be easily forgiven and he’s taken to add another big prize back against his own age group having already won the Windsor Castle at Royal Ascot and the Molecomb at Glorious Goodwood. Inquisitively was behind the selection at Ascot but he looked a smart prosect when scoring at York subsequently and rates a big threat if handing the ground, with Flora of Bermuda and Kylian others to consider.

Flying Childers Stakes runners and riders

The following horses have been declared for the Flying Childers Stakes 2023.

Big Evs

Trainer: Michael Appleby Jockey: Tom Marquand Age: 2 Weight: 9st 3lbs Draw: 10

Commanding winner of listed Windsor Castle at Royal Ascot before improving again to take Molecomb Stakes at Goodwood (5f, heavy). Easy to forgive no show in the Nunthorpe at York and expected to bounce back.

Fool’s Gold

Trainer: Richard Spencer Jockey: Hollie Doyle Age: 2 Weight: 9st 3lbs Draw: 11

Confirmed debut promise when winning Windsor maiden (6f, good to firm) 11 days ago but plenty more needed again to get involved in this company.

Francis Meynell

Trainer: M. D. O’Callaghan Jockey: Kevin Stott Age: 2 Weight: 9st 3lbs Draw: 3

70,000gns foal, 125,000gns 2-y-o. Half-brother to several winners, including smart 6f/7f winner Donnerschlag. Knew what was required and made a winning start in the manner of a useful prospect at Navan (5f, good to soft) 2 weeks ago. This is a big jump up but still warrants respect.

Trainer: Kevin Philippart de Foy Jockey: William Buick Age: 2 Weight: 9st 3lbs Draw: 2

Confirmed debut promise when an excellent third of 23 to Big Evs in listed Windsor Castle Stakes (18/1) at Royal Ascot. Progressed again starting out for this yard when commanding winner of listed race at York 3 weeks ago. Raced only on good to firm going. Smart prospect.

Trainer: K. R. Burke Jockey: Ryan Moore Age: 2 Weight: 9st 3lbs Draw: 9

Opened account in good style switched to AW at Newcastle in June and showed much-improved form when following up in a listed race at Sandown (5f). Did best work late on when third Molecomb Stakes at Goodwood (heavy) before excuses in Gimcrack at York. Not taken lightly.

Trainer: Richard Fahey Jockey: Oisin Orr Age: 2 Weight: 9st 3lbs Draw: 8

Off the mark first time up at Carlisle in May and improved significantly on that form when second to Valiant Force in Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot (5f, good to firm). However, disappointed when favourite for the July Stakes at Newmarket since.

Trainer: Roger Teal Jockey: George Rooke Age: 2 Weight: 9st 3lbs Draw: 12

Has quite a speedy pedigree and knew his job well enough to make a successful start at Ffos Las 82 days ago. However, bare form is ordinary and easy to look elsewhere.

Toca Madera

Trainer: Brian Meehan Jockey: Sean Levey Age: 2 Weight: 9st 3lbs Draw: 6

Down the field in the Norfolk at Royal Ascot but showed he can be competitive in Group company when 2 lengths third in July Stakes at Newmarket (6f, good to firm). However, beaten 6 lengths on soft ground in the Richmond at Goodwood since.

Valiant Force

Trainer: Adrian Murray Jockey: Rossa Ryan Age: 2 Weight: 9st 3lbs Draw: 5

Sprung one of the biggest shocks in terms of odds in the history of the Royal meeting when beating 13 rivals in the Norfolk, recording a good time in the process. Well held in Prix Morny at Deauville since, however, and soft ground is a concern.

Zoulu Chief

Trainer: Heather Main Jockey: Gina Mangan Age: 2 Weight: 9st 3lbs Draw: 1

Caused a shock at Newbury (150/1) on debut and, after a couple of lesser efforts, got right back on track with an emphatic success in a Windsor nursery. Followed up under a penalty in similar event at York but faces competition for lead here and ground a slight concern.

Flora Of Bermuda

Trainer: Andrew Balding Jockey: Oisin Murphy Age: 2 Weight: 9st 0lbs Draw: 7

First home on the far side when sixth of 26 in the Queen Mary and much improved faced with softer ground when off the mark in impressive fashion in 5f Goodwood event. Faded in the Lowther since but trip/ground more suitable here.

Graceful Thunder

Trainer: George Boughey Jockey: Daniel Muscutt Age: 2 Weight: 9st 0lbs Draw: 4

Well placed to win 3 of her 6 starts, including listed event at Deauville (5f, soft) last month. Close third in Group 3 at Lonchamp since and not taken lightly.
