13:50 Curragh – Prisoner’s Dilemma

I was really hoping that we would get seasonable wet September weather so there would be some give in the ground as Volatile Analyst is ready to strike off his current mark of 88, but I suspect the Portland Handicap at Doncaster may now be on the agenda in the hope that the weather breaks. Top weight Summerghand can’t be ruled out off a mark of 105, while I also have the utmost respect for Mr Wagyu as it is his time of the year, but Prisoner’s Dilemma makes much more betting value sense.

Winner over the course and distance last year off a mark of 100, the seven-year-old has run two races full of promise since notably as recently as Thursday when an unlucky in the run eighth at the Racing League meeting at Wolverhampton, only beaten two and three quarter lengths. If he is none the worse for that run then he could turn out again here and have serious prospects. In his absence, the pick would probably be the lightly raced Never Shout Never, an easy winner at Cork last time out and on breeding the better ground shouldn’t be a problem for him.

14:00 Fontwell – Quiet Thunder

Not the most high profile of races in the four events on the ‘value plays’ this week, but still an interesting one for betting purposes. Golah was a big disappointment last time out at Bangor and I’m not quite sure that this step up in distance is what she requires and she has been dropped just a single pound for that run.

Eaton Lady looks just about the form pick and has struck up a good relationship with the capable Isabelle Ryder, only just going down to Bensini narrowly at Worcester in July after winning bravely at Uttoxeter. However, this extra yardage is what Quiet Thunder has been crying out for after being outpaced at a crucial stage last time out. The Sarah Hollinshead runner is now down to her lowest ever handicap mark over timber and as long as they don’t dawdle here she should be involved at the business end.

14:55 Curragh– Ladies Church

This looks an above average renewal of the Group One Flying Five with Highfield Princess, Art Power and Bradsell locking horns yet again. Of that trio, the King’s Stand winner would get my narrow vote as I still believe we have not seem his ceiling as an out and out sprinter over the minimum trip, but at a significant double figure price I can’t resist having an each-way play on the Murtagh runner Ladies Church despite her being some 8lbs shy of the highest rated here.

Her run in the Nunthorpe can be safely dismissed as she was slowly away and then hampered in midfield, not having much room to get a run. Still, she was only beaten a shade over five lengths and this track will play much more to her strengths. It is interesting that the daughter of Churchill has only raced at the minimum trip on fast ground three times, claiming her maiden at Tipperary on it as a two-year-old, and I fancy she could get a lovely tow into this contest and possibly hit the frame for us.

16:25 York– Eetee

Following a smooth success at Haydock Park off a mark of just 78, I really thought that Eetee would be able to make his mark in class two handicaps and land a big pot this season, but once raised to 86 he simply couldn’t find the necessary improvement to cope with the raise.

Still, the top weight here has not been entirely disgraced in better company, but still had to be dropped back down to this level to regain winning ways at Redcar five outings back off 81. He once again was found out at class two level here at the Knavesmire when racing too keenly off a moderate pace when 11th of the 12 runners behind Astro King. But with Mark Winn taking 3lbs off his back and dropped back down in grade, he now finds himself racing off a rating of just 79 and should be able to deal with this lot as long as the ground remains on the fast side. Of his rivals, I am sure that there is a lot more to come from the relatively fresh King Triton while Highwaygrey continues to run well without picking up a gold medal.
