This three-year-old Never Shout Never gets a chance against the older horses after winning against his own age group at Cork. The form has had a boost with the runner-up winning nicely in a competitive handicap at Naas next time. It looked like there was more to come and it’s interesting that Fozzy Stack chucks him in with Jamie Powell again taking 5lbs off. The UK-trained horses have done well in the past in these sprint handicaps but the home side may stop that now.
She has cheekpieces fitted for the first time and Lumiere Rock was a good second in the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot before getting headed close home at Deauville in a Group race. Joseph O’Brien puts the headgear on now to try and seek out that little bit more improvement.
Tim Easterby will be hoping Art Power’s Love Affair with the Curragh continues. He finished fifth at Deauville last time, but seems to save his best for the Co Kildare track. Bradsell and Highfield Princess are very closely matched on their run in the Nunthorpe Stakes at York, but I fancy Art Power to get the better of both and bring this prize to the UK challengers.
Donnacha O’ Brien will never forget his filly Porta Fortuna winning with Frankie on board in the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot before runnig second at the Curragh in the Phoenix Stakes. Don’t underestimate that run behind a very smart colt in Bucanero Fuerte as it was no disgrace. That form could be good enough to win this.
Sue Magnier does an amazing job of naming all these amazing, thoroughbreds and City Of Troy looked a real star of the future when winning convincingly in the Superlative Stakes at Newmarket, sprinting away inside the final furlong. Faster ground should not be a problem and this son of Triple Crown winner, Justify, looks the real deal. Unfortunately for him, he has a stablemate to overcome as the unbeaten Henry Longfellow has been impressive in two wins this season. There were a few people raised eyebrows when both were declared. It’s fantastic that they take each other on. You cannot rule out Bucanero Fuerte. Any horse that wins a Group 1 by four lengths has to be respected. He will not go down without a fight.
I am going for fitness over ability in the Irish St Leger as Kyprios has been off the track a long time. He is the highest rated in the field and was unbeatable last season but has had a long layoff. Eldar Eldarov gets the nod on ground that he likes and that fitness advantage.
Wathnan Racing have done well with their purchases, having had two winners at Royal Ascot. It’s notable that Richard Fahy brings Native American over to run in this sales race and it looks a really shrewd move. He gets the nod after winning a valuable novice race at York on his sole start.
This grand campaigner has won nine times and is back on a winning mark again. Saltonstall ran on too late last time and has to have a chance in the finale again as he slips down the ratings.
