13:35 Kempton – Bay Bridge
Races every few moments on ITV Saturday starting with the Group 3 September Stakes over 1m4f. Israr has to give BAY BRIDGE 5lb and the latter really should be too good rated 121.
The Champion Stakes winner is best with some juice in the ground and hasn’t raced on an artificial surface since April 2021 when he was a winner at Newcastle. When on song he’s top class but he has to bounce back here from a flop in the Prince of Wales’ Stakes at Royal Ascot and the stable could be in better form.
13:50 Haydock – Light Infantry
ITV also go to Haydock starting here for the Group 3 Superior Mile. LIGHT INFANTRY and Chindit go here as two horses who are hard to win with but the former takes a big drop in grade and this is a gilt edged opportunity.
On his last three starts the Dave Simcock-trained selection has been second in the Group 1 d’Ispahan, third in the Group 1 Queen Anne and third in the Group 1 Jacques le Marois. This Group 3 is there for the taking under a resurgent Jamie Spencer.
14:10 Kempton – Brains
A handicap over 1m. BRAINS hasn’t done anything in two runs on turf in Ireland but he’s much better on artificial surfaces and might be good enough to cause a minor upset here for the McNamara team and Sefano Cherchi. My selection is a big price and a wide draw to overcome, but he usually bombs out the boxes and if getting loose could be hard to catch. A mark of 82 should be workable. Hopefully a clever selection.
14:25 Haydock – Lordship (each-way)
Here’s a handicap over 1m6f. LORDSHIP was behind Denmark in the Melrose at York but he might just reverse the form and take some beating here even with stable No. 1 Tom Marquand on Naqeeb.
Lordship was slowly away on the Knavesmire and did well to get fourth in the end, keeping on nicely. With Adam Farragher taking off 3lb he’s effectively 2lb lower here and I think he has a great each-way chance.
14:35 Ascot – Bless Him (each-way)
ITV are also showing racing from Ascot in this handicap over 7f. At the age of nine I might be dreaming a bit but BLESS HIM has his ideal conditions to run a big one for Hayley Turner and Dave Simcock.
It was in July of last year that he was second in the International Stakes off a mark of 102 and he’s on 101 here so clearly is handicapped to go close if anywhere near his best. A strong pace is needed and a return to form. A few quid on each-way.
14:45 Leopardstown – Meditate (each-way)
Big racing in Ireland on Saturday and ITV show you the Group 1 Matron Stakes for fillies and mares over 1 mile. Dermot Weld runs his two Irish 1000 Guineas winners in Tahiyra and Homeless Songs but it’s MEDITATE I’m giving another chance to for Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore.
The Breeders’ Cup heroine was sixth in the 1000 at Newmarket and second to Tahiyra in Ireland and then well beaten at Ascot and Deauville so has plenty to find. However, I’m not sure she’s been at her best this season and she’s a big price if returning to form. An each-way bet.

15:00 Haydock – Forza Orta (each-way)
The Old Borough Cup Handicap over 1m 6f and FORZA ORTA is unexposed as a stayer but he kept on really well at York to deny Aztec Empire. It’s not a given the latter will reverse the form even though he was a little unlucky in the home straight.
Forza Orta is only up 4lb for his success which seems very fair and has a fine racing weight of 8st 11lb. Rowan Stott rides again for Kevin Ryan with a strong each-way chance.
15:10 Ascot – Overactive
A mark of 85 might be a step too far for OVERACTIVE but he’s in cracking form and stays well so I’ll chance him getting the hat-trick up for Ralph Beckett and Laura Pearson who gets a big chance on ITV. The son of Awtaad is progressing well and has scored nicely at Lingfield and Leicester. He’s gone up 13lb in two wins.
15:20 Leopardstown – Luxembourg (each-way)
The Group 1 Irish Champion Stakes over 1m 2f. Aidan O’Brien’s Derby hero Auguste Rodin meets King of Steel for a third time. Ryan Moore’s mount was too good for King of Steel at Epsom, but was miles behind his old rival in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Qipco Stakes at Ascot when the Roger Varian inmate was a fine third behind Hukum and Westover.
Auguste Rodin was defeated by 127 lengths. No reason seems to have come to light and the performance is baffling, although many will point out he also ran a stinker in the 2,000 Guineas.
Both could easily show more being dropped to 1m 2f, but I won’t be giving up on Auguste Rodin’s stable companion and defending champion LUXEMBOURG, fourth in the King George and very good at this trip as he proved earlier in the campaign when landing the Tattersalls Gold Cup from Bay Bridge who is at Kempton in the September Stakes. He might get away from some of these on the front end and is worth a few quid each-way.
15:35 Haydock – Sacred
The big race of the day in the UK is the Group 1 Sprint Cup over 6f. Domestically it’s all about this dash and most eyes will be on find-of-the season Shaquille for Julie Camacho and James Doyle, who bids for another top level success after Warm Heart landed the Yorkshire Oaks.
Shaquille has captured many hearts after flopping at the start in both the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot and the July Cup at Newmarket but still managed to come through and win well, particularly last time when denying Run to Freedom and Kinross, who went on to take a competitive City of York.
Shaquille has quirks, but on all known form he will be too good. That said I can’t help but have a few quid each-way on SACRED for William Haggas and Tom Marquand.
I really fancied this horse behind Kinross at York last time, but she never did anything and the general consensus is that she just doesn’t like the Knavesmire. Sacred is best at 7f, but I suspect she will travel strongly in behind here and hopefully she will like Haydock as she’s never run here before.
