I’m keen to take on Amber Island, who struggled in this Class 3 grade previously and won a Class 4 last time out.
I’ve landed on Tough Enough, who is a course and distance winner. He’s an unexposed three-year-old who has won three of his last four starts and the form of his defeat at Newmarket has been held up. He was behind Executive Decision, who has won twice since and Dark Thirty has also won since.
His track record and unexposed profile makes me want to side with him. Indemnify also deserves a special mention and his trainer Alice Haynes is a serious operator.
Dancing In Paris always looks like an unlucky loser. He’s in very good form at the moment finishing second, third and second in his last three runs.
He’s up in trip now to 1m 4f and I just hope Cam Hardie can hold onto him long enough as you don’t want to hit the front with him too soon. If he gets a late run he should go close or at least surely hit the frame.
Coppice was one of the Gosden’s Guineas fillies and is still fairly unexposed and maybe needed a bit of time to mature. She was on the wrong side of the track in her Nell Gwyn Stakes defeat but she’s won two of her last three races.
She won a handicap at Royal Ascot off 97 and followed that up when fifth in the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket in July. That was a Group 1 contest and Coppice wasn’t disgraced. While she clearly isn’t a top-level filly, this isn’t a top-level race and she should be competitive.
Judicial goes really well at this track and his form figures at Beverley read: 1 3 3 1 1 1. He was a former winner of the ‘Bullet’ in 2019 and was third behind Tis Marvelous in 2021.
He’s only had two runs this season and was well beaten at Newcastle after a break and then ran fairly well at Ascot in the Shergar Cup. The fact he’s now 11 is a slight concern, but the run at Ascot shows that he is still capable of performing well.
Lord Protector has good course form having finished first and second here already this season. He’s been hit and miss otherwise but returning to Sandown is a massive bonus.
Good ground or better is fine and there should be more to come from him, especially over his favoured course and distance.
Military Order jumps off the page. He’s still capable of improvement and Charlie Appleby’s stable have done well with this type of horse over the years.
He had a setback and now all roads lead to the St Leger at Doncaster and although he was disappointing in the Epsom Derby, he should be up to winning this.
I wouldn’t be steaming into him as he’s been off a while, but I expect connections will want to be win this ahead of a St Leger bid.
If he’s beaten, it’s probably season over for him.
The Charlie Appleby stable won this last year and are represented by Aablan now.
Aablan wasn’t overly impressive visually when winning at Newmarket last time on debut despite being a 4-7 shot, but he broke smartly and seemed a very straight forward type. He set a good, steady, pace and he finished off his race well.
He looks a long-striding, galloping type and 7f at Sandown will be perfect for him. If he improves at all, he will be very hard to beat.
Mortlake also deserves a special mention as the Ralph Beckett stable are in really good form.
