The vote goes to CHARLIE ARTHUR, who produced his best effort of the season so far when hitting the crossbar at Windsor recently and he remains 1 lb below his last winning mark. He has a good apprentice taking over in the saddle now and seems sure to be competitive. If Black Smoke is able to back up his heavy-ground success at Lingfield under contrasting conditions he will be a threat, while the hat-trick seeking This Ones For Fred, Princess T and Uther Pendragon all make some appeal in this open-looking affair.
The Harry Eustace-trained BETWEEN THE COVERS was very green on her sole start last year and she still looked inexperienced when gambled on returning from 10 months off at Lingfield earlier this month. She was again strong in the betting and showed improved form to open her account at Yarmouth three weeks ago, appreciating the step up to a mile and a quarter and appearing to benefit from a quicker surface. Between The Covers is in good hands and is just the type to progress further now handicapping, so she is preferred to D Day Arvalenreeva who drops back in trip.
This doesn’t look the strongest race of its type and may develop into a match between DELLA and Back Tomorrow. Preference is for the former, who showed improved form fitted with a hood earlier in the year, not beaten far by some now useful types on her last two starts, and she remains with potential returning from a break now making her turf debut. Back Tomorrow has finished runner-up on both starts so far and is sure to give the selection something to think about.
DEPUTISE gained his first win since his juvenile days in a classified event at Southwell earlier in the month, travelling well and just shaken up in the closing stages, and he looks the one to beat once more despite having to concede weight all round. Jazzagal and We’re Reunited have to shrug off lesser runs but they both merit respect on the balance of this season’s form, whilst Zing Up produced a much better effort last time and wouldn’t be ruled out if able to back that up.
BEAT THE HEAT was a three-time winner over hurdles last year and he hasn’t shaped badly back on the Flat this summer. He was seemingly a little short of fitness on his return from a short break at Salisbury three weeks ago, leading briefly over two furlongs out but weakening entering the final furlong. He is entitled to be sharper for that run now and he remains on a mark he should be competitive from. Easy Equation, who has been holding his form well this year, may prove the biggest danger.
EYE OF THE WATER goes particularly well at this track, winning twice over course and distance this season, and he ran at least as well in defeat when runner-up back here last week. He was beaten by one who came from much further back in a strongly-run race that day and seems sure to launch another bold bid from 1 lb lower. In-form pair Lilandra and Roundabout Silver look the chief dangers.
