REMAADD is from a family that the yard knows well, a half-brother to several winners, notably the smart Gaassee, and he shaped with plenty of promise when finishing runner-up at Haydock a couple of weeks ago. He displayed signs of greenness, but stayed on strongly in the closing stages once the penny started to drop, and he seems sure to be sharper for that experience. He sets a good standard on form, with Centurion Dream, who built on his debut effort at Newmarket last time, feared most.
WILLEM TWEE developed into a useful sprinter last season, winning a couple of races over six furlongs at Doncaster and finishing first past the post at Kempton (subsequently disqualified). He was well supported on his final start back on the all-weather and he did well to finish as close as he did under the circumstances, conceding first run on the smart winner. There should be even more to come from him this year and, if his entry in the Champion Sprint at Ascot is anything to go by, connections have big aspirations for him this season. Many A Star and Tabdeed are a couple of the other likely contenders in a decent-looking handicap.
TORRE DEL ORO was strong in the betting after four months off and duly showed improved form when opening his account on handicap debut at Wolverhampton in April, relishing the step up to a mile and a half. He hasn’t progressed as expected since, but he contested a competitive handicap next time and may not have been suited by heavy ground at Chester last time. He holds a clear edge on form dropping into selling company and will be hard to beat if at his best in first-time cheekpieces. Devasboy rates the chief threat if his stamina lasts out over this much longer trip, although Ramensky can’t be left out if on a ‘going’ day.
FULFILLED has progressed further this season, making a winning return at Ripon in June and was well backed to resume winning ways at Lingfield (turf) two starts back. He won easily on that occasion and would have likely finished closer on his return from eight weeks off at Windsor 10 days ago had he not got stuck behind a weakening rival at a crucial stage. He remains with potential and is narrowly preferred to Sea King, who has form in the book to go close and needs monitoring in the betting on his return from three months off.
There is a fair bit of potential on show here and the betting should reveal plenty, but EASTERN EMPRESS showed much more when finishing third on all-weather debut at Kempton earlier this month, travelling best but seemingly not seeing out the longer trip. The return to a mile and a quarter will suit and she will have every chance of opening her account if building on that promise. Cherry, a well-bred filly who has also shown ability, looks the obvious danger, while Heavens To Betsy makes most appeal of the newcomers.
BLESS HIM (who is also engaged here on Saturday) ran a couple of crackers in the Hunt Cup and Bunbury Cup but he had a hopeless task from his position in the International Stakes at Ascot last time, making late headway without ever posing a threat. The return to a mile will suit him and he may be the way to go in a trappy handicap. The Gatekeeper, second in the Golden Mile, can go well, while Sudden Ambush is also considered.
Based on the form MORLAIX was showing in early 2022, he’s much better than a mark of 70, and it’s significant that connections have persevered with him, so he’s preferred to Eton Blue, who arrives on the back of a solid showing at Chepstow. Habanero Star is another one to consider back up in trip.
