TARBAAN has been given a chance by the handicapper which allows him to drop into this 0-75 apprentice contest after contesting slightly better races of late, and that gives him a chance of getting his head in front for the first time this year. He signalled a return to form at Newmarket earlier this month when third to Finest Leader in a change of headgear, and the cheekpieces are retained here. Freak Out arrives in top form after narrowly being denied a hat-trick of wins last time and is feared most, whilst Val Bassett can also make his presence felt.
George Boughey’s colt SPANISH ROCK shaped encouragingly on his debut when third to Seven Questions in a novice at Ripon earlier in the month and should know enough this time to get off the mark at the second attempt. He was slowly away, didn’t settle and ran green, as well as being denied a run and having to switch before making steady headway, so is certainly entitled to improve. The 5 lb Spanish Rock receives from Ayr winner Showhound may prove decisive, while Ingleby Archie is another to consider having made a promising start when third at Beverley.
The second division of the two-year-old novice doesn’t look to have as much depth as the preceding race so it looks a good opportunity for Archie Watson’s filly PROPITIOUS to make it two out of two. Despite being very green, she still managed to make a winning debut with plenty to spare in a maiden at Chepstow four weeks ago and looks sure to progress from that effort. Bulldog Drummond may emerge as the main threat after his third at Bath last time, while Super Fern and Super Hit are a couple of newcomers to note.
LOOK BACK SMILING quickened to score in ready fashion at Leicester under 5 lb claimer Laura Coughlan earlier in the month and his next outing at Hamilton three days later probably came too soon, so he’s well worth another chance under the same rider. Also a winner at Newcastle earlier in the year, Look Back Smiling has only been out of the frame twice this year in a busy campaign for Gemma Tutty. Recent course-and-distance winner Crown Princess is a danger and another solid showing is expected from Copper And Five who was third in the same race.
CAN CAN GIRL has shown some temperament in the past but she hasn’t done much wrong since joining Tim Easterby this season as she has been placed in all three of her races this summer. She was beaten just over a length into third behind Turner Girl at Newcastle last time and should appreciate the return to this longer trip so gets the nod. Annandale enters calculations on his third at Ayr two starts ago and Our Scholar, who completed a hat-trick over hurdles last time, rates as another of the main dangers.
NOVAK has been in flying form for the bulk of this campaign and completed a hat-trick north of the border at Ayr in June, all under apprentice William Pyle who’s on board again here. Iain Jardine’s gelding is fancied to resume his progress, a recent outing back at Ayr likely to have blown some of the cobwebs away. Strong Johnson produced his most promising effort since joining Paul Midgley when third at Ripon last week and is very hard to discount, with Herakles also considered after a decent fifth at Beverley last time.
BLAZING SON is an admirable sprint handicapper for Bryan Smart with a solid track record, so he’s the likeliest winner of a fairly open handicap. His two wins this year came on the all-weather at Newcastle and Southwell in the spring and he went very close again last time when rallying to go down by a nose to Bishop’s Crown in a blanket finish at Doncaster. Mighty Gurkha won at Leicester two starts ago and should be on the premises again and it would be no surprise if See My Baby Jive returned to form after a slight blip.
Tracy Waggott’s RAINBOW RAIN got the better of next-time-out winner Quercus at Thirsk on his penultimate start and again ran well when runner-up to Ben Macdui at Newcastle over five furlongs last time out. The return to six rates a plus and with William Pyle taking off a valuable 5 lb, he looks sure to go well again. Birdie Bowers, who was runner-up in this race 12 months ago, is a threat if shrugging off a lesser run at Southwell six days ago. Autumnal Breeze and Wade’s Magic complete the shortlist in the biggest field on the card.
