ITV Saturday gets under way with the Group 3 Strensall Stakes over a mile and a furlong. There’s a very good chance we didn’t see the real NOSTRUM at Glorious Goodwood and I have no problem at all giving him another chance here.
The Sir Michael Stoute-trained inmate just didn’t finish off his race in the Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes and was picked off by strong stayer Epictetus. However, for much of the race he looked a good thing and he can bounce back for Ryan Moore.
ITV also go to Goodwood Saturday starting with this Group 3 Prestige Stakes for juvenile fillies over seven furlongs. SHUWARI is really putting Ollie Sangster on the map and is unbeaten in two starts. Her second start was in Listed company at Sandown and she did well to see off the talented pair of Fallen Angel and Soprano. Appears to go on any ground and is an exciting daughter of New Bay. Kieren Shoemark takes the ride.
A valuable handicap over a mile and three quarters. I’ll chance VAGUELY ROYAL for the Stradivarius team of owner Bjorn Nielsen and trainers John and Thady Gosden. The son of Galileo has been a relatively short price in all four starts and landed odds of 4/7 in a maiden at Doncaster last time. That took his rating from 85 to 87 so it wasn’t an incredible performance, but he promises to be much better stepping up to this trip. Robert Havlin is on top.
The Group 2 Celebration Mile over a mile. GALERON will be a big price and is held by Epictetus on Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes form. That said, I’m happy to play him each-way for Charlie Hills and Tom Queally. This is a big chance for the latter who hasn’t been on many high class horses in recent years, and his style might be perfect for Galeron. My hope is just too long in the odds after a fourth in the 2000 Guineas and fifth in the Irish equivalent.
Huge pot up for grabs in the Group 2 City of York Stakes over seven furlongs. A decent renewal with plenty of pace to suit a closer. For that reason I’m all over SACRED for William Haggas and Tom Marquand who have had a good week. The daughter of Exceed and Excel has always had plenty of talent and once ran in the 1000 Guineas behind Mother Earth. As it happens, seven furlongs on fast ground is her ideal trip and with this big field she can cruise behind the pace and come through late.
The big betting race of the week in the Ebor Handicap over a mile and three quarters. I’m very worried about Sweet William on the ground so will take him on. TASHKHAN hardly ever races on ground as fast as this and it’s a leap of faith whether he will act on the surface or not as he’s been a non runner twice on good to firm recently. However, he’s now in a handicap off 106 having spent most of his career in Group races including when fifth behind Kyprios in the Ascot Gold Cup when on a mark of 115. A fast gallop at this trip will be ideal for this often closing style and he’s a massive price for a horse with his ability. Obviously we need to get lucky, but at the odds I’ll chance him each-way at 33-1.
A handicap over six furlongs. FRESH has not been at his best this term but he still ran a cracking fifth in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot and he must have each-way claims for James Fanshawe and Oisin Orr. He’s dropped from 103 to 101 this term which just gives him a little chance and I like the fact he stays a bit further than this. Some of his best form is with juice in the ground but he won the International at Ascot on a fast surface so he seems to go on anything.
So best of luck and pray for Yeeehaaas. You hear me Paddy?
