This looks a trappy enough race and would be one for minimum stakes – if any. There’s nothing among the older horses that worries me but the stable form of Sir Michael Stoute could be better and at the prices, I’m happy to leave NOSTRUM win without carrying my money. Who knows, he might just have the class to see it through and start to really progress in his three-year-old season.
Shuwari was well backed overnight before her debut at Newbury and won convincingly. Overnight markets can give you a big indication of how connections feel their runner will fare. Shuwari was held up out the back off a slow pace but powered on clear to win that day in a seriously good performance.
She followed that with a Listed Race next time out at Sandown beating Fallen Angel and Soprano who were 1-2 in the Group 3 Sweet Solera Stakes at Newmarket after that. Her times suggest she is beyond this grade and should go very close.
Charyn has been running in Group 1’s most of the season and has just fallen short of winning. He drops back to Group 2 level now and although it’s a competitive race, the drop in grade can help him get his head in front for the first time this season.
He’s Group 1 placed twice this season so I’m happy to take a chance on him to hit the bullseye.
I’m keen to take on the favourite Kinross who I think is too short in the market. Sacred went off favourite for this last year and was beaten by Kinross but I can’t get away from her run last time out at Ascot.
She’s tracked the leaders off a hot pace and still plugged on all the way to the line when just beaten a neck by Khaadem, who was held up out the back and avoided the carve up on the front end. Her two runs this season have been close to the best of her career so I’m happy to take a chance on her at the prices.
I was at Killarney Absurde won first time out over hurdles for Willie Mullins and he jumped like he had very little experience of jumping hurdles. It cost him plenty of ground throughout the race, but he powered on to the line very smartly.
Finishing second to Vauban at Royal Ascot was no disgrace – it’s top-class Flat handicap form and Vauban has gone on to win a Group 3 contest since then at Naas. Absurde is only 3lbs higher than that Royal Ascot run which gives him a huge chance.
He disappointed over hurdles last time out at Galway but for a horse bought from France he had no soft ground form and his jumping cost him again. He returns to the Flat now and with better ground off this mark of 104, he’ll take massive beating.
