Never This Way is bred to be useful – he’s by No Nay Never and out of a mare who was placed at listed level – and he shaped best when runner-up on his handicap debut at Chelmsford last month. Never This Way went like the best horse at the weights and displayed a very willing attitude to fend off the third but he was picked off late on by one who came with a late surge. The winner has struck again since and Never This Way, who remains open to further improvement, looks like a well-treated colt after edging up only 1 lb for his latest effort.
Heartfullofstars made a promising start to her career when runner-up at Newmarket a couple of weeks ago, showing plenty of ability in a race contested by some very well-bred fillies (the winner is out of Juddmonte International winner Arabian Queen). She is entitled to improve for that experience and it could take a useful effort from one of her rivals to stop her from getting off the mark.
Zain Nights shaped better than the result would suggest when fourth over this course and distance on his penultimate start – he was held up in a race in which it paid to be handy – and he confirmed his return to form when runner-up at Kempton last month, putting up his best effort of the season. Zain Nights has edged up 2 lb since his latest effort but remains on a competitive mark and, with Harry and Roger Charlton’s team in excellent order, he looks set to give another good account.
Gone has enjoyed a productive campaign this term, winning on four occasions, and she ran right up to her best when runner-up at Newmarket on Saturday, proving no match for the impressive winner but finishing nicely clear of the rest. She holds obvious claims off the same mark here and can add to her haul for the campaign.
Queen Emma has shown race-by-race improvement and pulled out a bit extra to get off the mark at Lingfield last month on her first attempt at a mile and a half. She did well to make up ground off just a steady gallop at Lingfield last time, finding plenty and clocking a good sectional time, and an opening BHA handicap mark of 80 could underestimate her, particularly as she has more to offer over this trip.
Buddy’s Beauty won handicaps at Nottingham and Leicester in June and was only narrowly denied the hat-trick back at Nottingham last time, going down by just a short head after lugging left under pressure and ending up on the far rail. This lightly-raced four-year-old is clearly in good order and should launch another bold bid off the same mark.
