It’s the turn of the sprinters to take centre stage on Friday and it’s fantastic to see such a strong field for the Nunthorpe Stakes.Paul Hanagan is having his last ever ride as a professional jockey on Woottonsun for owner Steve Bradley. You will remember these colours were worn by Paul on The Ridler when winning at Royal Ascot a few years ago. They would love to send him out on a winner and this is going to be the perfect send off.
Quickthorn, a son of Nathaniel, is pretty versatile on ground. We know he loves this track and this two mile trip. He is very hard to peg back. I may have a saver on Giavellotto, as he looks like he loves York and he won here in May.
Karl Burke looked like he had a fantastic team heading into Royal Ascot but it didn’t quite work out that way. However, he must think Kylian has a big chance. I like Kings Gamble, who made a very impressive debut at Newmarket. Ralph Beckett is not one for overfacing his runners and even though owner Steve Parkin loves runners at this meeting, they must think a lot of Kings Gamble to pitch him in there.
Mick Appleby has done really well with sprinters and it was huge for him to call Big Evs ‘probably the best I have had’. He receives a minimum of 19lbs from his rivals and in some cases he gets 22lbs & 21lbs respectively off Bradsell and last year’s winner Highfield Princess in the weight-for-age allowance. That is a big advantage and I have to go for him.
William Haggas loves a winner at York and you can’t help thinking he would not run Amanzoe in a deep race like this if she was not ready for it. She ran very well in this contest last year so we know she handles the track and the ground.
