Mambo De La Luna is the least exposed of these and she did show a bit of promise in maidens, but it probably makes sense to rely on the tried and trusted. Magnetic North and Comfort Line have strong claims but KHAFAAQ‘s consistency is a big selling point at this level and, unlike others, he seems happy on most ground.
This may hinge on the capacity for improvement from those colts who shaped so well last time out. Bad Desire, Thor’s Hammer and Beauty Thunder are feared in that order of preference, but the form of STAR HUNTER‘s third at Leopardstown now looks really good and here’s hoping an absence of three months doesn’t find him out. Significant confidence behind Cambridge would naturally put a different complexion on matters.
This is likely to concern the three previous winners, all of whom hold Group 1 entries. My Mate Alfie faces no easy task having to concede plenty of weight to two smart fillies, with RIBCHESTINA narrowly preferred to Nemonte despite the latter’s latest effort looking all the better following the events of last weekend. Although far from disgraced in a good Group 3 last time, the selection should appreciate returning to soft ground on which she shone first time out.
Unless the dogs are barking about newcomer Uncanny then this looks best left to NELDA, whose only blip to date came in a Group race. She was a tad unfortunate not to justify favouritism at Galway and would be conceding more than a stone in weight to Hazalaya, Muhaarar’s Girl and Rebecca’s Girl were this a handicap.
Emorcee is tempting after bumping into one well handicapped at Galway and this sharper test will suit, while Loingseoir, First Gentleman and Eloquent Arthur need shortlisting. However, it was never in much doubt when DRAGON OF MALTA (nap) won comfortably at Galway and he can deal with this 9lb higher mark.
Not many to seriously consider. FISHERMAN’S BEACH shaped with a deal of promise at Limerick and, while a two-month absence and his trainer seeing the need for headgear casts some doubts, he may still provide the answer. One line of form gives Yamalia Star as good a chance as the selection. Great Cat Mau is the other obvious candidate, though Hardpoint needs checking in the betting and Metamorpheus has developed into a decent hurdler since his only previous run on the Flat two years ago.
This race is named after Rory Cleary’s late brother, Sean, and his mount NOSTRA CASA can get back on the scoresheet returning to soft ground, even if this trip is a little sharp for him. L’Un Deux Trois is 3lb higher than when winning at Tipperary last time but should go well, while Franno is in fine form too. Secret Rock and Action Motion are players too.
