Six of the last eight winners of this race were drawn in single figures. Alligator Alley is a course and distance winner from a few years back and has won off higher marks than the 91 he runs off here. David O’Meara is a trainer to follow in these wide open handicaps and he’s a fair price. He’s a horse that’s been dropping in the weights despite running well of late.
This is a good race and I like Ballymount Boy. He got beaten a length behind Vandeek last time at Goodwood on soft ground and that form was franked in a big way when that horse went onto win the Prix Morny last Sunday. He can be a bit slow away from the stalls but I like what we’ve seen of him so far and although he has the joint most runs in the race along with Hot Fuss, he’ll take this.
Although he has a 3lb penalty, Gregory should be very tough to beat. Saint George wasn’t beaten far by Castle Way last time and the third horse from Ascot, Chesapeake, won his next start, so the form is solid. If Ryan Moore didn’t drop his stick on Tower Of London last time he’d have beaten Castle Way and Contunous has yet to win as a three-year-old, although he has been highly enough tried so it all points towards Gregory.
Paddington has improved remarkably this season and is bidding for his fifth Group 1 on the bounce. He’s bound to feel the affects of those races so I’m looking towards the distance betting and playing the unders if you wanted to back Paddington but didn’t want to take the short price that he is. He’s going to make the running you’d imagine and Ryan Moore won’t be going overly hard given it’s just his second time at the trip and his main rival Mostahdaf is a winner over 1m4f. I don’t see there being too much in it at the finish.
Zanndabad has been well supported and you can see why given Ryan Moore is booked for Tony Martin but the bottom horse Grappa Nonino most interests me. He won a very competitive handicap at the Curragh only 10 days ago and he was a winner over 2m1f in Killarney back in May, so we know the trip won’t be any issue. Saffie Osbourne is a very good booking for a horse with such little weight and with the four places on offer, I struggle to see him out of the frame.

PP Trader and all-round good guy Ryan McCue reckons Dermot Weld's Grappa Nonimo (16:10) is a stand-out on day one at the Knavesmire.
