Horse Racing tips: Ruby Walsh’s best picks for Saturday’s ITV Racing

Ruby likes the look of Lakota Blue in the 15:15 at Ripon the Great St Wilfrid handicap.

13:50 Newbury – Kemari / Klondike (see ground)

I’m hoping all eight stand their ground. I’m going with two picks; depending exactly on what the ground is like at Newbury on the day. If it’s on the good side, I’m going with KEMARI but I can’t have him on slow ground.

If the ground is soft or on the soft side of good then I’d go with KLONDIKE because he’s won previously at Newbury on soft ground in April. He ran well behind Gregory at Goodwood too although he blew out a little bit at the Bahrain Trophy when he dwelt in the stalls. The ground was too quick for him there.

If the going is slow, it’s Klondike, if it’s on the quicker side and we have a dry morning, then it’s Kemari.

14:05 Newmarket – Silver Samurai

SILVER SAMURAI is a fair price. He ran well behind Tiger Crusade on his last start at Newmarket. He was a bit short of room on the last furlong which didn’t help him but, more importantly, he’s dropped to 87 in the ratings having started the season at 99. That rating now is just about within Silver Samurai’s range.

He won in May 2022 off a mark of 88 and he’s won off 92 at Haydock too. He’s back on a mark he’s capable of winning off.

14:40 Ripon – Strong Johnson

STRONG JOHNSON has dropped from a mark of 92 to a rating of 71 since joining Paul Midgley (trainer) from Dennis Cullen in Ireland. He was punted at Nottingham where he finished fifth behind May Blossom and was ridden very prominently on that occasion.  He hasn’t got a bad draw in stall six. Those who might still be unexposed at this stage of the season are Absolutely Flawless, who looks like he’s not progressing and Northcliff. So, you’re looking at older horses who have all had plenty of runs this season and are dropping down the handicap.

15:00 Newbury – Classic

I’ll admit that I do love tipping Accidental Agent. He’s on a mark of 98 and in his heyday it’s a mark he’d be well capable of winning off. He’s running well, his last run was at Chepstow in the Racing League. It was in a Class 2 handicap so I’m on his side.

I’m going to take a chance on a young horse who is improving and one they obviously have high regard for. CLASSIC started the season in the Greenham behind Isaac Shelby and has eventually started to progress from there and that’s a classic trait of Richard Hannon’s horses.

He won at Sandown when he beat Novice and Tiger Bay. He could be going in the right direction. Off a mark of 89, he’s only up 2lbs after that win at Sandown. The 7f trip should suit.

15:15 Ripon – Lakota Blue

I tipped Summerghand at Goodwood two weeks ago and he was a non-runner, I’m assuming it was because of the really soft ground on the day. The rain would put me off going with him again as well. I’ve seen there’s 12mm of rain forecasted and if it rains that much, I’d be with LAKOTA BLUE, who ran really well at a handicap at Goodwood behind Jm Jungle lately.

He’s a three-year-old who is still improving off a mark of 88.

15:35 Newbury – New Endeavour

I don’t fancy Chindit while Jumby would want quicker ground. Pogo’s running style won’t suit at Newbury as there’s no undulations to let him get away on the front end. Mammas Girl won the Nell Gwynn Stakes on good-to-soft ground but ran terrible then on soft ground after that. She only had a middling run on her last start at York too.

NEW ENDEAVOUR has won on the all weather a couple of times but his run in the Britannia Handicap  – when he was second to Docklands – and his run behind Nostrum on his last start at Newmarket was good too. New Endeavour has the form in the book for me.
