13:50 – Newbury – Kemari
14:05 – Newmarket – Mister Bluebird
14:25 – Newbury – Whenthedealisdone (each-way)
14:40 – Ripon – Impeller (each-way)
15:00 – Newbury – Open Mind
15:15 – Ripon – Wobwobwob
15:35 – Newbury – Chindit

13:50 Newbury – Kemari

ITV Saturday gets under way at Newbury with the Group 3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes over nearly a mile and three-quarters. Not much between this lot on ratings with Arrest the obvious one who might be better than we have seen recently. KEMARI was actually dropped a pound in the ratings despite taking the Fred Archer last time so his form might not be quite as good as it looks. That said he’s well up to landing a race like this and stays well. It’s just a worry the Charlie Appleby horse has not been flying with the older horses. William Buick rides.

14:05 Newmarket – Mister Bluebird (each-way)

ITV also go to Newmarket Saturday for this handicap over 6f. MISTER BLUEBIRD stays up to 7f and runs this course well so I would expect at least an each-way chance for the Heather Main runner under George Wood. Was a non runner in this contest last year but can make up for that if repeating a third at Ascot earlier in the season off 2lb lower.

14:25 Newbury – Whenthedealisdone (each-way)

A handicap over 5 furlongs. The question here is how low in the weights WHENTHEDEALINSDONE goes before he bounces back to form. The Roger Teal inmate is now down to 87 having been on 98 when a fine seventh at Ascot in July of last year. He’s had bits and bobs of good form since then and not much in between. I’ll take the risk this is his day under William Buick and have a few quid on each-way.

14:40 Ripon – Impeller (each-way)

ITV’s other meeting is Ripon where action begins with this handicap over 6 furlongs. I have to be honest there are more I don’t fancy here than I do. It looks like a minefield. I’ll risk the bottom weight IMPELLER each-way for Duran Fentiman and Tim Easterby.

My selection is well handicapped and might be well drawn if high numbers are an advantage. He hasn’t had many tries recently on better ground and provided it doesn’t lash down in the 24 hours before racing he should have an each-way chance.

15:00 Newbury – Open Mind

Another handicap here this time over 7 furlongs. Accidental Agent is going to win a race like this soon but might find OPEN MIND too good here for Oisín Murphy and Saeed bin Suroor. It’s hard to say whether Open Mind is better at 6f or 7f, but he might have too much pace at a crucial stage for some of these and his form at Meydan earlier in the year was good. This is a chance to bounce back to winning ways.

 

15:15 Ripon – Wobwobwob

The big betting race of the day in the Great St Wilfrid Handicap over 6 furlongs. Most of the fancied runners are drawn low. WOBWOBWOB stays a bit further than this but is drawn close to speed and has place claims at least for Joe Fanning and Adrian Keatley. Goes on any ground but if the rain comes that will suit and he has loads of handicap form that allows him every chance including a fine effort behind Dakota Gold at York.

15:35 Newbury – Chindit

Up to Group 2 class here for the Hungerford over 7f. CHINDIT often bangs his head against the wall in top grade and deserves to land a prize like this for Richard Hannon and Pat Dobbs. No one really knows his perfect trip but he has the pace for 7f despite running terribly in this last year behind Jumby who is back for more. Ran an absolute belter when second to Modern Games here in the Group 1 Lockinge.
