JAKIMA offered encouragement when third in a stronger race than this on her nursery debut over seven furlongs at Chester last week, shaping like she would benefit from another step up in trip. Jakima, whose dam is a half-sister to three Group 1 winners in France, should still have a bit more to offer after only four starts and a bold bid looks likely on her first try at a mile.
DAARREE failed to make much of an impact in maiden/novice company but, with a visor fitted, he proved more competitive on his handicap debut at Chelmsford last month when beaten only a length and a head in third. Daarree looked unlucky not to finish closer there as he was short of room over a furlong out but he kept on strongly close home, leaving the impression that there could still be more to come. He remains potentially well treated off just a 1 lb higher mark and can open his account.
SECRET BID is a half-brother to several winners and represents a trainer in Archie Watson who has a good record with newcomers, particularly on the all-weather. Watson has posted a small level-stake profit (£5.34 to £1 stakes), and an excellent strike rate just shy of 25%, with two-year-old debutants starting out on the all-weather so his representatives are always worth noting.
FERDEN WELLS is a half-sister to numerous winners, including a smart German Group 1 winner in Well Timed, so she takes the eye on paper ahead of her debut at Kempton. Ferden Wells is trained by Andrew Balding whose string have been in excellent form in recent days, with the yard sending out an across-the-cards treble on Saturday. Lady de Bathe comes from an excellent family – her dam is an unraced half-sister to Group 1 winner Lillie Langtry – so she is another to consider.
DAPHNE MAY underlined her wellbeing when making it two wins from her last three starts with a cosy success at Epsom earlier in the month, winning with more in hand than the margin of three-quarters of a length would suggest. That was a fourth success of the year for Daphne May who still looks fairly treated after edging up 3 lb for her latest win, and she should launch another bold bid.
ARCADIAN FRIEND was narrowly denied at Lingfield on his penultimate start, losing out on the nod on his first attempt at two miles, and he then made the most of a good opportunity back down in trip at Chelmsford last week, having matters under control from a long way out and scoring by four and a half lengths. This is more competitive than that four-runner event, but Arcadian Friend is clearly in good heart, still unexposed over two miles and looks capable of defying a 5 lb penalty.
