It’s Shergar Cup day at Ascot the team competiton. Sometimes the luck of the draw can be kind but a there are quite a few international riders with little or no experience of riding at Ascot. The regular riders can be a real asset.
Stuart Williams is a really good trainer and Existent was very unlucky when running at Ascot behind Intrinsic Bond, losing his winning chance with a shoddy stalls start. It was a good run at Goodwood and has been dropped 2lbs in the ratings. Tom Marquand is booked to ride.
Hollie Doyle is a familiar name and teams up with Jessica Harrington’s The Very Man who ran an absolute belter in the big amateur race at the Galway festival last week. Ground conditions look perfect and this dual-purpose runner who looks to have a very strong chance in a race that should be run to suit. He loves to come off a strong pace.
Karl Burke trains for Sheikh Mohammed Obaid and they look like they have an exciting horse in their hands here in Poet Master. He bolted up at Haydock last time and looks one to follow off this mark.
Max Mayhem has won three of his 17 stars. His last two runs were at Ascot and he ran a very good race over this trip last time out on similar grounds. He also ran a blinder in the Duke of Edinburgh at the Royal meeting and the jockey Murzabayev is a very capable pilot. Anybody who is given the job of first jockey to Andre Fabre can get the job done. Monsieur Fabre takes no prisoners when it comes to jockeys and he would not employ this one if he wasn’t capable.
Richard Fahey’s Midnight Mile didn’t quite get home over 1m 4f at Royal Ascot in the Ribblesdale Stakes. This looks more like her trip on what we saw at York last time. Connections think a lot of this filly, she finished a good fourth at the Breeders’ Cup as a two-year-old and seems to have rediscovered her mojo.
Perotto has been very well backed the last few times he has run, winning the big Challenge Handicap at Sandown over a mile. He looked like he got a little bogged down in that Golden Mile at Goodwood. The ground will be much more to his liking here and he is still attractively, weighted considering his profile.
It’s fair to say this hasn’t been the best season for the Godolphin team, but that could all change as Wild Goddess made up for a stumbling start at Haydock first time up when making no mistake at Newmarket last time. This daughter of Coolmore, sired by Camelot could be really smart on what we saw at Newmarket. I want her on my side.
Hayley Turner has been a real friend to a lot of punters in the Shergar Cup and she has picked up a really good ride here for John and Thady Gosden. Rajasthan was the winner of a maiden at Salisbury last time. The form has worked out well enough as the second horse ran well in a maiden on its next start. His second to Ciceros Gift last year reads well as he is now rated over 100.
Joao Moreira is called the ‘Magic Man’ and he is a brilliant rider. He’s very nearly pulled off a huge shock in a Group One at the Royal meeting a few years ago and his ability to adapt to different racetracks is well-known. Batal Dubai looks tailormade for his style as they will go quick with the likes of Washington Heights in the field. The selection can pounce late and take the prize.
There’s very little between the top two in the market on ratings as Bucanero Futile just chinned Unquestionable by a short-head over the same course and distance. Buccanero Fuerte is a very strong stayer and if there is a little juice in the ground that could tilit it in his favour.
