Top of the list is Henry Candy’s PENGUIN ISLAND, who is versatile ground-wise and hit a personal best with her breakthrough win at Chepstow 18 days ago. Sera Dawn was a good third behind an improver at Sandown last time and she’s feared most on her drop back in grade. Third choice is Sergeant Pep, who is on a dangerous mark and could make a bold bid on his drop back in trip.
Adaay In Devon has finished second at Goodwood and Bath in her last two runs and sets a fair standard. She’s respected along with Zariela, who made a promising start at Kempton last month, but there are also some interesting newcomers in the line-up. May represents a yard with a record of 2-7 with 2yos here in recent years, while Unico also needs watching in the market, but the vote goes to VIDEO GAMES. Ralph Beckett’s filly is bred to be a sprinter and has slow-ground winners in her striking pedigree.
Navarre Express should benefit from the greater emphasis on stamina but this looks a good opportunity for ALBANY to get off the mark. She finished in front of Tarraff (second choice) and Deep Dive at Kempton in June and ran another fine race when second over C&D two weeks ago. She looks a stayer in the making and the testing conditions could play to her strengths.
This looks wide open but it might be worth siding with INDIAN CREAK, who is a four-time C&D winner and looked as good as ever with his dominant display on slow ground at Epsom last time. Hat-trick seeker Knebworth is feared most ahead of Haymaker and the Charltons’ generally progressive 3yo Magical Merlin. Treacherous has possibilities if he gets a good pace and some luck, while others to consider are Lethal Nymph and Amazonian Dream.
Queensland Boy (second choice) chased home a major improver at Chepstow 18 days ago and he’s respected at this new trip. Imperial Cult was placed at Newbury last time and could be dangerous on this drop back in grade but the one that appeals most is PFINGSTBERG (nap). David Simcock’s 3yo found more progress with his close call behind a well-handicapped rival at Leicester last week and is on the same mark in similar conditions here.
Most of these have something to prove on the ground but there are no such concerns for LAWN RANGER. Michael Attwater’s veteran won off this mark here in April and could enjoy a tactical advantage, so he’s taken to register a fifth C&D win. Platinum Prince might prove the main danger.
