ZABBIE ran well in a much deeper race than this at Newbury last time and Richard Hannon’s filly is taken to open her account for the season in this apprentice race. Fifth to the rapidly improving Isle of Jura at Newbury last time, Zabbie won a nursery over this trip at Doncaster last year so the return to seven furlongs looks likely to suit. Ex-French gelding Pinwheel is yet to win in this country but is well treated on the pick of his form and rates the main threat ahead of Hobson Point.
AMBIENTE AMIGO was no match for the potentially useful Carolina Reaper on her Newmarket debut for Michael Bell last month, but she still shaped with plenty of encouragement to finish second in front of other fillies with more experience than her and this looks a good opportunity for her to go one better. Squeaker, who was back in fourth that day, and Royal Expert, who was third on her debut at Chelmsford, can battle it out for minor honours.
BETWEEN THE COVERS hails from Harry Eustace’s yard whose runners tend to improve markedly from first to second run, so she earns a tentative vote to do just that in a weak novice. She was last of eight on her debut in a similar event at Yarmouth last October after starting slowly and shaping as though in need of the experience. City of York had an unfortunate experience when unseating, leaving the stalls on his reappearance last month but sets the standard on his all-weather form from last year, with Sonnet Star also feared.
LOUGH LEANE was a shade disappointing at Ripon last time when third to Edwina Sheeran but makes more appeal judged on his reappearance/handicap debut at Yarmouth earlier in June. Also third on that occasion, he stayed on under a patient ride to finish less than a length behind Trooper Bisdee with the remainder well strung out so he’s well worth another chance. Major Major, third at Newmarket last time, should have more to offer upped in trip and is a threat, along with Club Manager making his handicap debut on his reappearance.
LILKIAN performed with credit in a better race than this at Newmarket a week ago when fourth to May Blossom and, on that evidence, is capable of cashing in on his lower turf mark. That was over five furlongs, too, so the return to six looks another plus after winning over that trip at Kempton last month. Big Bard is in excellent form and is an obvious danger if taking up this engagement (also declared at Bath 24 hours earlier), with I’m Mable another to consider.
TRADESMAN is still looking for a first career win for David Simcock but the marked drop back in trip to this evening’s distance of a mile and a quarter evidently suited him last time when third to Bailar Contigo in a classified stakes at Yarmouth. That suggests he’s capable of taking advantage of a lowly mark back in handicap company. Dark Company is untrustworthy but won in selling company over course and distance ten days ago and is a threat if in the same mood for his new connections. Rita Rana is another to consider.
