LAKE FOREST stepped up on his debut form when filling the runner-up spot in the July Stakes over this course and distance last month, running on well from rear to pass the post only two lengths behind the winner. A few interesting newcomers feature among the opposition in this novice event, but Lake Forest has quickly proved himself a useful colt and it looks a straightforward opportunity for him to double his career tally under a penalty.
SWISS STAR didn’t need to improve to open her account at Doncaster last time, travelling well and ultimately getting the verdict by a head having been produced to lead close home. That was a fair performance and it will be interesting to see what she can do now making the switch to handicaps. An opening British Horseracing Authority (BHA) mark of 72 is no gift, but she’s taking on more exposed rivals and her smart pedigree is that of a filly who should make more improvement after just three starts.
RAQISA ran another solid race when finishing third at Windsor last time, passing the post only two and a half lengths behind the winner and looking unlucky not to give the front pair more to think about having been short of room against the rail for much of the straight. She finished with running left and certainly showed enough to suggest she is still on a workable mark. A consistent mare, she seems sure to go well again as she seeks a second win of the campaign.
DOOM took a step forward when suffering a narrow defeat on her final two-year-old start at Doncaster in October, only losing out in the final strides having been prominent throughout. The first two pulled clear of the rest and the filly who beat her was none other than the Oaks winner Soul Sister. This will be a belated return to action for Doom, but she retains plenty of untapped potential for her top yard and a novice like this should be a mere formality before she steps up in grade.
PANNING FOR GOLD had a bit to spare when completing a hat-trick at Doncaster last month, gradually asserting late on to land the spoils by a length and a quarter. He’s clearly going the right way and the manner of his victory on Town Moor suggests he was full value for a further 5lb climb in the weights. He possibly isn’t entirely straightforward (carried head awkwardly under pressure last time), but the forecast strong gallop should make him an easier ride for Jamie Spencer.
ATASER returned to form when fitted with first-time cheekpieces at this course a few weeks ago, seemingly benefiting from a more positive ride as he stuck to his task well to be beaten only two and a quarter lengths. That was a big step back in the right direction and he is one to be interested in all of a sudden, lining up here from a 5lb lower mark than when scoring over this course and distance in June last year.
