None of these can be ruled out but WARHOL comes here on the back of an excellent second at Newbury in May when going down by just a nose to Dashing Panther. That followed a win at Windsor under much more testing conditions the previous month, while the Newbury form has been franked since. With Benoit de la Sayette in the saddle in this apprentice contest, Warhol edges the vote from the in-form pair Wonder Starelzaam and last month’s course winner Daphne May who can chase home George Baker’s progressive four-year-old in that order.
A repeat of the form REDNBLUE SOVEREIGN has shown on his last couple of outings may be enough for him to get off the mark at the fifth time of asking. The son of Ten Sovereigns has run well to be placed in both those last two starts, chasing home promising newcomer Sunway in a maiden at Sandown and then giving weight to the pair who beat him when third to Equity Law in a novice at Salisbury last time when dropped back in trip. Mnawekh, I’m Puzzled and Mullazem look capable of better and may give Tom Dascombe’s charge most to do in that order.
SWEET FANTASY was seen to good effect from the front at Leicester last week but she could do no more than win decisively and this four-year-old filly who still hasn’t had much racing for Ralph Beckett can follow up under a penalty despite top weight. That win by two and a quarter lengths from Edwina Sheeran was a second career success for Sweet Fantasy and proved her effectiveness on soft ground. Haarar, who shaped as if still in form at Sandown last time, and Naasma, a close second over course and distance last month, head the opposition.
Just the five declared for this fillies’ handicap, and if the refitting of a hood helps CHASSERAL to settle better, she looks capable of winning off this mark. She wore the headgear when getting off the mark at Newcastle last year and when she made the frame in handicaps on her first two starts this term. Chasseral has raced without it of late, but it was probably the change of tactics to front-running which were her undoing at Newmarket last time. The thriving Kimnkate, who has won three of her last four starts, is the obvious threat.
SERIOUS LOOK’s only previous win came in testing conditions at Epsom last season so looks interesting here for George Boughey. He got back on track after a breathing operation when fifth at Yarmouth last time and has the potential to do better with cheekpieces applied back up in trip to this extended mile which should suit him better. Desfondado is a danger off bottom weight following his clear-cut course-and-distance win last month and Cobalt Blue can’t be ruled out, he too running well at this track last time out.
Richard Hannon’s runner OPTIVA STAR is still seeking a first win but is on a handy mark and would have gone close with a clear run at Lingfield last time but was hampered at a crucial stage before keeping on well to finish third to Proud Fairy. He’s therefore worth chancing for all that Twilight Dancer was a comfortable winner over this course and distance last time. Lahina Bay had been in good form prior to an excusable run last time, she too not getting the best of runs in a race at Lingfield, so she’s also worthy of respect.
