17:40 – Up And Under

The track have switched the Flat races on the card to before the Galway Plate at 18:40 so that tells you how you how much rain there has been at Ballybrit over the past few days.

It’s not often you see runners in the Irish Derby pitch up at Galway but Joseph O’Brien has opted to run Up And Under in this to try and shed his maiden tag. He has a rating of 106 and really should be winning this with that much in hand. There’s 18 runners declared but he’s bringing a different level of form to the contest. Winter Fog could be one to hit the places.

18:10 – Immelmann

A two-mile handicap is up next where Immelmann makes his second start for Willie Mullins and Rachael Blackmore is due to ride. He ran creditably when sixth to Dartan at the Curragh last month having been well-supported in the market. He should come on for that run. Mr Escobar is the Mullins’ team other runner but he needs to be going left-handed to produce his best.

18:40 – Hollow Games

The Galway Plate is one of the highlights of the week and with defending champ Hewick out to defend his crown off a mark of 167, it means Kilcruit gets a lovely racing weight of 11st 5lbs. He won the Punchestown Handicap that has been a good pointer to the Galway Plate by 15 lengths but the one concern I’d have is the heavy ground as he improved over fences in the spring.

Gavin Cromwell saddles Final Orders who will handle the conditions but the handicapper may have caught up with him. There isn’t much between Authorized Art and Ash Tree Meadow on their Tipperary run last year off level weights when Authorized Art beat him well, but he’s a much bigger price than Ash Tree Meadow now.

Fury Road is Grade One placed in the Savills Chase and Irish Gold Cup at Leopardstown last February and is now running in a handicap. He will have his supporters if the ground isn’t to soft form him. It likely to be too testing for Easy Game.

The one that really stands out is Gordon Elliott’s Hollow Games near the bottom of the weights. The seven-year-old has been running over 2m against very good opposition in chases but his novice hurdle form saw him over similar trips to this. He’s a massive runner under Sam Ewing with just 10st 2lbs on his back.

19:15 – Aurora Princess

The mares only handicap hurdle follows the Galway Plate and Emmet Mullins could be on the board with Aurora Princess who has had a change of ownership recently to the Mee Family who love a winner at Galway. She has won at Galway – but was disqualified after a mix up in that she ran in the two-year-old race as a three-year-old by mistake. Donagh Meyler’s mount ran well when sixth in a Flat race at Tramore last time (Teed Up, second), so she makes plenty of appeal.

    19:50 – All The Others

Three runners for Team Mullins in the 2m 5f Maiden Hurdle where Paul Townend rides High Class Hero ahead of All The Others and Alvaniy. The first two are both Listowel bumper winners but I wouldn’t be surprised if All The Others proves stronger as he seems to reserve his best for the track.

    20:20 – Wellhavewan

Wellhavewan did well to win in Ballinrobe over two miles but has gone up 12lbs in the rating for it. The step up to 2m 6f could help him defy that penalty though as he’ll be better suited to this test under Patrick Mullins. He’d be my best bet of day three at Galway.
